Earlier she said the beacon doesn't work at all unless there are planes overhead.

Which is darned peculiar since they use satellites to communicate.

She is free to lie about what she thinks is true about the beacon. She can also do that with Fuiaba.

No one has commented on my suggestion that they may have mis-identified 6 gill sharks, which do grow to over 20 feet, do congregate in groups, and do attack aquatic craft. They only come to shallow depths at night, being deep-sea dwellers normally. At least one of the reported attacks was at night, when identifying the species (and guessing the size) is going to necessarily be more difficult.

ETA......here's the link again. Fascinating, even if I'm wrong.

Mike I think the sixgill is not likely. They should not be expected at the surface. They shouldn't be in groups. If at night, they would be nearly invisible because of their coloration.

If that was the only unlikely aspect of their story, then yes.

Given the level of imagination demonstrated in the rest of their account, I think that they probably asked TragicMonkey to come up with it.

You should watch the clip I linked to a page or two back, WP. And yeah, they do go to shallow water at night, they are seen on the surface, and if they thought the boat was a dead or dying whale, then "attacking" it in a group wouldn't be such a stretch. Dogs are notorious for attracting sharks, for starters.

Just because their story is full of holes, doesn't mean it is ALL made up.

Just sayin'.......

Mike if you want to speculate about them really seeing large shark(s) then go with my upthread suggestion - whale shark. Largest fish in the world, cruises near the surface, conspicuous and sometimes more than one.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with that. It's actually more likely a candidate, I'd have thought.

We could start working on the movie script...

Hurry up and man that sail!
What?
You heard me.
But Jenny, yesterday we agreed that you wouldn't say that. You said you would tell me to girl the sail.
Oh yeah, I'm sorry. Now go down!
What?
Go down below.
Why?
Do you want to be eaten by sharks or do you want to be eaten by me?
I'm lovin' it. See you soon.

I guess it was only a matter of time before the DailyMail would dig up the dirt on Jennifer Appel. They spoke to her friends to find out about her. This link is NSFW as there are censored nude photos. They say she had ideas about moving to Tahiti. Wrecked a previous boat named FSOW (which might be an acronym for Copulating Fece On Water). She writes erotic fiction and might do a book about this voyage or one inspired by it. She's now homeless because she lived on the Sea Nymph. It won't be her first homeless gig though.

EXCLUSIVE: Truth about the bungling yachtswomen 'lost at sea for five months' - one was crash-prone 'kinky sailor' who paid for trip by working as a dominatrix - and the other had never sailed at all (and now they're planning to write a book)

Calm down, WilliamP. She might have been a dominatrix looooong before she wanted to go to Tahiti. You didn't read anything over on Sailing Anarchy, I take it.

According to her then boyfriend, she was in a motorcycle accident which broke almost every bone in her body. Unfortunately, it was probably Appel who told him the story.

God. That photo of them with all the sailors behind. Can you imagine? Being pulled from your normal duty, or your downtime, to stand in formation behind these two women for a photo op? What a waste of time. And then to learn how much of a clown show the whole thing really was... I feel sorry for those poor sailors.

Slight digression: The younger boyfriend is described as a "professional" blackjack player. Unless somebody actually counts cards -- which is both very difficult and closely watched-for in casinos -- can anyone actually be a "professional" blackjack player, which at a minimum would mean winning more than you lose?

At this point, I think I have more questions about Fuiava.

Appel turns out to be a run of the mill airhead freak. But what's Fuiava's deal? In every photo she's grinning like an idiot, but this can't have been her first rodeo. I mean, something this stupid, you must have a track record of questionable life choices, leading up to something a stupid as this.

We know where Appel came from. What's Fuiava's origin story?

Everything I have read so far about this Appel woman makes me think she is a certifiable nutcase

Well, Fuiava is a Tongan name, so I guess Tonga, Japan, Hawaii, Australia or New Zealand could be likely starting places. However, its a fairly common name. There are several first grade Rugby Union and Rugby League players in New Zealand and Australia with that surname.

She is Samoan from American Samoa. I think she moved to Hawaii somewhat recently and was a security guard at the same marina where Appel kept her boat, or nearby. See the link in post #373.

Thanks, I've been following the story. I know where Fuiava comes from in the literal sense. What I'm asking about is the pattern of life choices that led up to this particular adventure. Not so much the "what" (which we know), but the "why".

How about no pattern, but that she simply was a bit naive and fell for Appel's tall stories?

Two recent articles from Taiwan. The fishing boat never hit them and the crew wasn't trying to kill them. Appel didn't have to use the fishing boat sat phone to call for help because the fishermen already did that immediately upon rescuing the women.

This has the unfortunate look of a statement of fact from you, WP, when in fact these are just claims in a couple of newspaper articles based on the testimony of the fisherman. Would you expect the the fishermen to have said anything else, whatever the facts? Your efforts can sometimes look like a hatchet job rather than an investigation.

There should be logs of some activity, if the public ever gets informed. Like, who did the fishermen call? When did the USN ship head for the Sea Nymph?

And Mike, have you seen any pictures that show damage done to the Sea Nymph?

Hmmm, might be the Taiwanese that get to the bottom of the story, to protect the reputation of their fishermen.

"Change the name, change the luck" is that way I heard it. Kwajalein was an amphibious attack by the US in WWII. My uncle was there. I could see why somebody could name a boat that, or not like the name.

It's as if the burden of proof is being reversed. Prove that you didn't try to kill them. Prove that you didn't wreck their boat. Etc.

Said rammer may have had a name change, bringing bad luck to them.

I must admit, I thought that making up the the bit about the fishermen was a bit harsh - there being no reason to believe any more of that than the non-existent storm... their electronics dying except for their water purifier which held out until dramatically before rescue (down to their last gallon, IIRC)... the swimming? surfing? to the the fishermen to ask them not to kill them... the 30ft sharks attacking the boat... their decision to not use their satellite beacon... their inability to have enough fuel but plenty of food...

All the rest didn't blame anyone, but that blamed someone who helped them.

Every year since 1990 the US Public healthcare spending has been greater than the UK as a proportion of GDP. More US Tax goes to healthcare than the UK

I'm not claiming that anything that WP said was factually wrong, and the lack of damage has been noted previously. What I am saying is that WP has a habit of stating someone's account as though it is fact, rather than just being one side of the story. This is a long-time habit, also evident in bigfoot threads. Everything WP put in the post I referred to may turn out to be correct, but at the moment, we don't know that it is. A caveat or two would make these sorts of posts look more like critical thinking and less like a witch-hunt.

So, personalized the arguement eh?

First the personalization, then the defense, than tit-fopr-tat on and on.

I don't much like the name of my boat. The original name (still visible on the wheel) was better. I haven't renamed it out of laziness, not superstition.

But you're right that some folk have a superstition in that regard.
