So whatever algorithm or process they use to make twitter friendlier doesn't eliminate old tweets, it just suspends users? My understanding of twitter is poor and from the article you posted didn't really clear up my understanding, but they seem to suspend people for some things that violate some code and in this instance with using the same tweet different group the person was suspended. I for some reason thought twitter removed "offensive" tweets, but I guess that is incorrect. They just leave the offense but remove you.

Oh, I'm the one disrespecting her by saying she's way out of line and a racist trying to use a lame excuse to cover for it?
Quote:
Where are all the actual racist tweets which have been aimed at her, BTW? I would think that one or more of her defenders would have wished to present some evidence of what she says is the truth or is it that we must simply take her word on it? That's probably it. A young, Korean woman is free to spew racist garbage because she claims she has received racist comments before. Select few? All of the literally hundreds of tweets over years about big things and small, targeting white men, white women, white women liberals, white people speaking Korean, and on and on and on and that's a select few to you? If she feels so downtrodden she is an adult and is perfectly free to spew her racism back in Korea where she might feel much more comfortable but then she wouldn't be speshul and a victim there, would she? I read several hundred of her racist tweets just last night. If it really is a gag then it got really old after the first handful. And I think that you're being quite insulting with your dichotomy there but... whatever. Yup. I'm really glad you're cheerleading another racist who is willing to "make a point" by being massively racist thus continuing to fan the flames of racism in this country instead of actually and honestly searching for a solution.

I have no right to object to being the subject of racism because of some other white people who are racists who will not listen to reason and logic and therefore must be ridiculed, mocked, and shamed and I am just the collateral damage and should shut up anyway because I share a similar skin tone and happen to live in the US. Show me some evidence please then. I mean, I ask but I know you won't. I'm just not sure what excuse you'll use. I'm specifically asking for abuse hurled at Jeong pre-2013 and so it doesn't matter if it's tweets or email or FB or whatever. I don't think at all that this context is true, nor if it were true, that it's any legitimate justification for the sheer time, volume and subject matter of the racist tweets she's made. It strikes me more as an angry person who is very willing to lash out for their perceived injustices and sense of entitlement. And it also raises a question of how she behaves with her supposed boyfriends and other relationships and whether or not she's even physically violent.

No one should believe you or anyone in this thread that racism is bad when you and others are defending racism. The hypocrisy isn't the worst thing in the world but does mean that your opinions and beliefs aren't really to be trusted and cannot be taken at face value. |

People are trying to defend her by pleading "context," but the meaning of a sentence does not change just because of the background and history of the person writing it.

First, quotes on Twitter (or Facebook, or here) aren't "massively racist". Donating to George Zimmerman, voting for a dimwitted bigot like Dolt 45 (or Steve King, Joe Arpaio, and so forth), going to a Unite the Right rally (hey, they're showing up soon in DC), calling police on black people cooking/eating/walking/sitting/selling water/lemonade...That's getting towards "massively racist".
Quote:
Quote:
(Also, I have at times, in threads on police getting shot, and occasionally in response to ST/logger/other obvious racists and white nationalists.) Because she isn't being specific at all about who she's targeting. I am white, therefore according to her and you apparently, I am not acting in good faith to begin with and therefore I should shut up and take being insulted simply for having white skin. I have no right to object to being the subject of racism because of some other white people who are racists who will not listen to reason and logic and therefore must be ridiculed, mocked, and shamed and I am just the collateral damage and should shut up anyway because I share a similar skin tone and happen to live in the US.

It's not like anyone should be shocked by any of this - I've seen it directed at Jemelle Hill, @rodimusprime, @elonjames, Imani Gandy, Joy Reid, Franchesca Ramsey, Ta-Nehisi Coates when he was on Twitter, Leslie Jones (and by the same group dogpiling Jeong right now), Delores Shilling, *every* person of color negatively highlighted by Breitbart, Twitchy, and Daily Caller, everyone nonwhite person targeted by Gamergate, every nonwhite person or woman (and especially nonwhite women) starring in a major sci-fi series, Barack and Michelle Obama...the list could go on and on, but that's enough. Hell, for that matter, I recvall when black and white people on Twitter swapped avatars - not even bios that specifically referred to their race, just avatars - and white participants being stunned by how much worse they were treated. At this point, since Jeong's been flooded as far as search engines go, so you're right, I'm not digging through years of replies to her.

Considering the breadth of the comments she made regarding white people, I am fine with using the term "massively racist." How she votes or what events she attends or where she donates money isn't available to me.
But, okay, I'll drop the modifier "massive." Better? Now we can agree that you're cheerleading racism and not massive racism, then. Why are you fine with cheerleading racism?

... and dude, every little bit helps or harms. Why are you defending the harm? And this is the second time you've downplayed this woman's explicit racism pretending like I or anyone else, cannot both care about this issue and every other issue you raise; that I or anyone else is crying about nothing; that I or anyone else cannot also fight injustices going on around the town, community and the world. I do not expect you or anyone to be aware of where I post (I mean which threads on ISF) and what I comment on to be sure. But I do state loudly and clearly my concern regarding the tumbling down this shitslide with (as you kindly pointed out) a blatant racist as a president as well as the blatant sexist, bigoted, misanthropic idiots on the supreme court and every level of goverment; I fight for equality for men, equality for transgendered people and on and on. I'm sorry, I don't mean to make this about me in any way, but just to demonstrate that I acknowledge what you're saying is true and yet I also care about *anyone* who feels it necessary to attack any other race. I find it ironic in a way that I can call out white racists all day long I guess because the racist is white, and yet I cannot call out asian racists because the racist in this case is not. |

Do you not get parody or are you just playing devil's advocate. Just like Donnie Johnny (as explained via Sean and Kellyanne and Sarah) she's "not saying all whites(Mexicans, Muslims, Prisoners of War, Immigrants)", she's mocking a specifically annoying sub-set of whites.

Okay, score five points for "finding an actual reason to hate her". This is real world stuff. It's not really related to this tempest in a pearl-clutching teapot but I can file her away under people who I probably don't like. (I'm assuming Xiao Wu's story is accurate which could be a mistake but it's a damned good fake if it is one. Unlike the dreadful racist posts, she backed her claims up.)
It doesn't change my impression of her Twitter behavior one iota, though. |

I'm not downplaying them. I am saying that I think you are wrong. I've known too many people on the left who mock bigots, misogynists, reactionaries, etc.... by making fun of them via mimicking what they say as idiocy. If you have not had that experience, then your frames of reference may simply be different than mine.
I didn't mean "disrespect" in the sense that it's used in the vernacular (e.g. "them's fighting words dontchoo disrespect me"). Sorry 'bout that. I meant it as a lighter variation of "dislike". You think she's racist, you don't like that. I didn't mean it as you being insulting. You can keep calling it racism. That does not mean that I agree with you. Perhaps you should include "in my opinion" on some of your pronunciations? |

Oh, I think the existence of the racist posts have been well substantiated of hundreds of tweets over years and years. What has not been substantiated but only taken as a given is her defense that it's all just satire. Or reverse-trolling. I dunno, the story keeps changing, who knows what the defense might be tomorrow.
Quote:
I am not widely traveled on social media so I do not have that kind of exposure. Nonetheless, I still find it hard to believe that anyone reverse-trolls to the extent that she has made her racist statements. For ****'s sake, she's a Harvard law graduate and she still acts like a marginalized victim. I'd love to see some of the many, many leftist victims who twitter and blog that much racism as mimicry. I seriously doubt you can do it. We're not talking one or two or a dozen LOL haha you dumb racists you posts.

Yeah, I would actually agree. It keeps on getting better and better but hey, gotta keep with the story... it's all in good fun! No big deal! She's had a tough, tough life and hey, what's a little tiny bit of racism amongst friends! |

It may be worth pointing out that satire is a method that one can use to reverse troll. Your claim that the story keeps changing is not one that's in evidence.
Some people get a kick out of doing so or do a little bit of crusading, especially if they're under the impression that it could accomplish something. In explanations offered up, it sounded like she claimed the latter was what was going on, mostly, but that she also supposedly came to the conclusion that it doesn't help, and so stopped. Ehh... If that article is, in fact, correct, it still doesn't give any actual firm indication of racism on her part, which is the actual issue of this thread. It's worth bearing in mind, of course, that racism is not a requirement to be a rather terrible person. |

I didn't say "internet". I know these people ITRW. I know anecdotes are not evidence, but too bad...
I reached my maturity (although some argue I haven't really) in New York City in the 60s. I'd been involved in Civil Rights demonstrations and sit-ins since I was but a lad in New Orleans. I gravitated to the political side of the West Village. My best friends' parents were like serious Communists albeit a mix of Stalinists and Trotskyists. (Heck, my best bud Peter had just had his family move back from living in Khruschev's Russia. His dad was a guest lecturer, but mostly just a CP party hack.) When I moved out at 17, I shared an apartment with Chris. Chris was white. As were his mom and dad, but he was raised by a series of stepfathers who were black as coal. For all intents and purposes Chris was black, just not the right color. As lefty nutbars we'd parody redneck bigots all the time. All of us, but Chris in particular. And we all knew it was parody because we all knew each others' credentials. Chris found out when he was about 19 that his actual father was a jewelry merchant in Texas, who'd decided to try to find him and make a new start. Chris was raised thinking his surname was XXXXXXX (it's a relatively famous jazz player but not significant to the story) and for his own reasons decided that he'd give it a go and moved to Texas. I was dodging the draft in Canada and while we stayed in touch it was like a postcard or letter a year. But when I had a chance to meet up with him in the early 80s when we were both in Florida for a few days, we hooked up. I remember nothing about the exchange or evening other than asking him, "Honestly, how long did it take you to figure out that outside of our little comfy band of droogies, almost anyone who heard a black joke took it seriously, not as mockery?" He'd had the same experience I'd had dabbling in a totally different corner of the continent. First, when everyone laughs with you, you think you've found another bunch of cool-hip-informed people, but when the door was open by our own comment (usually a reaction to something happening around you at the moment) they'd launch into canned and pointless old racist jokes. By "pointless" I mean that the object of the joke can be changed from black to Jewish to Polish to Italian depending on who you want to disparage. We talked about it and it was the hardest thing to adjust to being outside our comfy little left-wing-meets-Sesame-Street integrated community of kids. Of course, with spoken humor we could use exaggerated redneck accents and it sort of made the matter clearer. With the written word unless you try very hard, you cain't git that dialogue thing goin'. But, yeah, I know those people because I'm one of them. Making fun of paleo conservatives and mocking bigots... I do it all the time. A couple of conservative snowflakes have tried, totally insincerely, to label me a racist as a result. I lose a lot of sleep over that, let me tell ya! (yeah, I also do sarcasm) I'm totally open to someone catching her in an interview actually exhibiting racist behavior. I haven't seen it. It doesn't have to be people who attacked her personally, but a general type will do. |

She is saying all whites. Seriously, that's pretty basic grammar. Her statements are categorical. Even if her intended target is some sub-set, her actual words reach beyond that. Parody can still be racist. And in this case, it clearly is. I can see being willing to forgive her for past racist statements (although she's apparently a terrible person even otherwise, no surprise), but to deny they are racist at all is just tribalism.

It's the "you're one of the good ones" defense of racism. It's not racist to disparage whole populations of people because obviously the broad characterization only applies to a small subset. Total BS.
There's nothing new under the sun and all these explanations have been tried before. The only difference is that racism towards white people is the great exception. |

For reference: I never said that I find racist jokes always unacceptable. Made them myself, like Foolmewunz I've enjoyed it from others - laughed at them on some tv shows and movies. It's fine, so long as you know that the person making it is intentionally being a jerk in order to make fun of actual racists. So no, I don't have a problem given what she's posted on this.
Now, when it comes to these jokes, I'll say that they usually aren't *funny*, but that's another matter.

Now, is it possible that at some point they'll discover an actual child molester or hateful person, that they will attack as opposed to their wild defenses of Dolt 45, Richard Spencer, Milo Whatshisface, and so forth? Eh, anything's possible. They've never done it before, and they aren't doin it now. So, I'll continue to regard them as the untrustworthy bigots that they were back when they were posting memes of a cartoon frog in a SS uniform shoving journalists into gas chambers and dogpiling people on youtube and Twitter. IOW, I'll continue to view them as exactly the aggressive bigots they've long shown themselves to be, and take any thing from them with strong skepticism, same as I do for any other sort of actual ethnonationalist or supremacist. And I recommend that you do the same. Consider the source, their honesty, and their intentions. |

Might that have been the point?
Do you think she sent out more of these messages than she received? By the way, the Vice crap has put me off really having any incentive to continue this conversation. The Times absolutely should rethink this hire, but not because of the tweets. But, feel free to PM me if it seems like I'm ignoring something you'd like me to address. |

Not to beat a dead horse, but the Times should question whether she should be writing on Tech at all.
I mean the whole gag should have been subbed out to some sort of script that just flipped every thing that included certain keywords back out with substitutions. That would have been far more impressive, as an act of art. That she didn't automate it is sort of sad, really. |

I like it how suddenly there are all of these rules that are to be followed before calling people racists.

Honest answer. Because there's been an effort (one which I understand but do not agree with) by some to use "racist" more narrowly to only refer to "institutional racism" or more broadly to mean things like unintentional use of privilege.
This, while perhaps well intentioned in some aspects, has done nothing but make an already loaded term loaded and confusing. |
