Yet what changed by the declaration? Now Trump has more power...The man who tried to do a TV broadcast to re-assure the nation and ended up lying about his own policies (i.e. that cargo would be affected by travel restrictions to europe) has more power. The man who has used the Covid-19 pandemic to hype border security with Mexico (despite the fact that Mexico has fewer cases than the U.S.) now has more power. The man who ended up shaking hands with over half a dozen high-level executives (despite the fact that he had been exposed to the virus on multiple occasions, and despite widespread suggestions not to shake hands) now has more power. The man who didn't even know the flu killed people now has more power.

Why would stock traders be re-assured at all by the knowledge that Trump himself has more authority?

It's not about supplies. They are offering their parking lots to be used by mobile testing facilities.
My mistake... I didn't realize the context between the meeting between Trump and the Executives. Still, the same argument applies... he didn't have to introduce the executives or have them appear on camera... just say "these companies have agreed to have their parking lots used..."

Remember, we're talking about a guy who concerns himself with TV show ratings while in the midst of a national emergency. It's all about showmanship for him because that's what he basically is: a showman.

Thank you for reminding me that not all thoughts should be aired. (In fact, I told that to our departed colleague more than once.) Even when those thoughts are in large part sincere.

I've never posted anything like that in my many years here spouting off about all sorts of deplorable characters. This reflects the severity of my views about how destructive Trump is. Still, point taken.

The giant parking lots that are almost always 3/4 empty?

Such noble sacrifice!
May not be a huge sacrifice, but it may still cost the companies which allow their lots to be used.

People may decide to avoid the stores in question out of paranoia about the disease (i.e. "Don't go to those stores because you'll catch Corona in the parking lot")

The testing centers might cause traffic problems that might deter regular shoppers (depending on how the centers are organized.)

Or, they may find that that '3/4s empty' parking lot is closer to being full by people shopping for supplies, but now they can't find parking because of the testing centers.

There is of course no guarantee that any of that will happen for sure, but they are risks to the companies involved.

That page also shows that President Trump holds the record for the fifteen largest one-day drops.

There does not appear to be any reliable evidence that he signed printouts of those days.
On the other hand, given how chuckle-headed our POTUS is, I suspect a wag might be able to get him to sign a print-out of one of those drops by sweet talking him as he holds out a pen and paper.
What's so damn stupid about this is that the day before, again, the largest raw number drop in the history of the Dow happened, and that was 100% caused by his dumpster fire Oval Office speech. I guess he just figures everyone forgot about that one. So far in the past you know.

Good chance they both were exposed at Mar-a-lago. Four of the Brazilians there were infected, one infected the Miami mayor, and the evidence is, any surfaces the contagious men touched at Mar-a-lago could have remained infectious for hours, long after Pence arrived.

What I'm hoping is incompetrump exposed dozens of people in his administration, including Pence because incompetrump refused to self-isolate and he would be contagious before symptoms started.

Incompetrump was tested yesterday, results are negative (just announced). Doesn't mean he isn't still incubating or that he won't be exposed again as the Mar-a-lago outbreak spreads.

Now incompetrump will be even more defiant about infection precautions.

You might. I would say the same, were he still nothing but some racist on twitter. Unfortunately, he's now a wannabe dictator moving to purge the entire government of anyone but sycophants, while putting a particular ethnic group into concentration camps, all while Moscow Mitch and the Robert Supreme court smile and approve. The GOP has chosen to reject democracy, rule of law, and the rest of their supposed principles, in favor of a caste system.

(Not that I'm shocked, they've been walking down that path for decades...)

In my opinion, the best thing for the US, at this point, would be for him, Pence, and particularly Moscow Mitch, to all catch this disease and die of it, and for the entire GOP to disintegrate shortly after, much like the Whigs after the death of Harrison.

( I absolutely reject violence or conspiracy against him - creating martyrs would be counterproductive, and also, the assassins would be murderers, which I oppose. )

Perhaps then we could have a second party comprised of actual conservatives, rather than radical proto-fascists, and there could be a serious debate about what would best serve the country in the future, without the conspiracy theorists, the "power at all costs" Moscow Mitch types, and other radicals.

We should be so lucky...

And yes, I know, "Be careful what you wish for". I admit, it's a gamble.

While it may be obvious to all rational people that stock prices would drop if a president announced that all trade from Europe would be shut down, President Trump most certainly does not believe that anything he has said or done has negatively impacted stock prices. It is beyond his capacities.

I cannot say is is suffering from a pathological narcissistic personality disorder, but I think it is clear he is doing a perfect impersonation of someone who is.

Why do i not find this comforting/
Because there is no comforting option. Whether Trump lives or dies, it'll be bad either way. Going further, even if Trump was infected, he'd almost certainly lie about it to try to keep up his strongman public persona, so we're left in a position where we cannot reasonably trust the claims coming out of the White House.

Going further, that, alone, is already a pretty good indication that we're likely to have a million people dying of the coronavirus in the US, given the horrendous mishandling of the problem that's inevitably going to be happening when the top government officials can't be trusted hand in hand with that utter lack of trustworthiness.

A number that will doubtless be artificially reduced given the lack of available testing and number manipulation by the Trump administration.

Of course, even with that, we've got an admission on record.

Quote:
CDC director Robert Redfield admitted some Americans who seemingly died from influenza were tested positive for novel #coronavirus in the posthumous diagnosis, during the House Oversight Committee Wednesday.
As it is, at last check, if one tests positive for the flu, they're very, very unlikely to get tested for the coronavirus as well, given the lack of testing capability.

( I absolutely reject violence or conspiracy against him - creating martyrs would be counterproductive, and also, the assassins would be murderers, which I oppose. )
Death by karma is much less of a rallying cry than martyrdom, after all. And man, Trump, McConnell, and the rest of that ilk have earned a friggin' lot of bad karma.

It's a nice wish. Given the far too rich forces behind the scenes, though, and their current entrenchment, enabling, and the damage done already, I don't see that as a particularly likely scenario, unfortunately. To get to a point like that, the rules of the political game are going to need to be upended a bit and returned to that which will actually serve the general public, rather than almost exclusively the desires of the very rich.

Based on past history, the likelihood of Trump actually having been tested, and having been tested negative, are No and Hell No, respectively.

I was tested for flu about a year ago, and came back positive for RSV instead. The test involves sticking a swab about 11 feet up your nostril. You think Trump's going to submit to that?

Unless he gets off on having it done by a hot eastern European nurse, of course.

[godwin]On a more somber note, I'm reading How Democracy Dies, and apparently this is exactly how the powers that be in Germany regarded Hitler. I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read the book, but suffice to say it didn't quite work out that way.[/godwin]

Weren't those 'saner heads' protecting us from Trump supposed to reveal who they were soon?

I fear for what passes for Trump's mental health, now that he stopped holding rallies.

There are two rules here

1: Never believe anything that Dolt 45 says. I honestly have no idea what he said when, I don't trust him as far as I can spit. Just letting that slightest sliver of "Yeah, okay" nonsense slip into your brain is bad.. It's nothing but theatrics and deception. Never listen to him unless you wish to throw literally *everything* he says out.

2: Whatever He Says Others Will Do to Him, he's doing to others: Yes, I know. I just try to make sure my local communities safe. Yes, He'd put a Corid-19 person in the press pool, just to sicken them - as an example.

Don't worry. He'll just inject heroin instead.

Paula White, a top official in the White House Office of Public Liaison, is scheduled to be the featured speaker at a fraudulent April conference promising "supernatural protection from the Coronavirus. The conference organizer claims that Christians aren't true to their faith unless they believe they can have magical protection from #Covid_19. They are endangering the lives of the elderly people who listen to their messages, beyond trying to make money fraudulently. Link

Donald J. Trump has a televangelist from Florida: Paula White, an outsider whose populist brand of Christianity mirrors Mr. Trump’s conquest of the Republican Party. And she is in many ways a quintessentially Trump figure: a television preacher, married three times, who lives in a mansion. For years he has called her his longtime friend and personal pastor. Link
