I can't decide which part of it is harder to believe: the Democrats are so corrupt that they would spend tens of millions of dollars on someone who is ineligible to hold the office or the Republicans are so incompetent that they let someone not eligible make it all the way to election day.

You forget the conspiracy theory mindset: Evidence against the theory is evidence of a cover up of the theory. Lack of evidence for a theory is evidence of a cover up of the theory. Suggesting that theory might be wrong, that's just what they want you to think!

There is no convincing them they are wrong.

I had a friend e-mail me a screed about this last week, and when I replied I hadn't heard anything about it he was like "See? Libural media bias!"

He heard about it listening to Michael Savage, and then proceeded to send me a link to some WorldNetDaily-type web site.

:oldroll:

He heard about it listening to Michael Savage,
Yeah, someone posted a link to the show maybe a week or two ago. It was presented by Phillip Berg, the man who was trying to sue Obama off the ticket. The case was dismissed.

Berg was all talk and no substance. He provided nothing to support his claims. But that didn't stop nut jobs like savage (and a few posters here) from swallowing it hook, line, and sinker without a hint of critical thinking.

Funnily enough, the latest take on this is that Barack is Malcolm X's illegitimate son, which would make both his parents American citizens...

...which would make Barack a natural-born U.S. citizen by law if he'd been born on the Moon.

Come on, everyone knows Obama is the antichrist, so by definition is is not "naturally born", much less a citizen. It says so right here in this email chain I got. If its on the Internet it must be true.

Why do people still believe his is a Muslim (10-15%)? Why do people believe Iraq attacked us on Sept. 11th? Why do people believe that we found WMD in Iraq? Why 22% of Americans people believe that their estate tax will be subject to a tax that only hits the top 2% of estates?

People are stupid.

You're right.

Somewhat OT, and not directed specifically at you, Darat - is there such a thing in the USA as a "legal alien"?

Yes. I am one. Or registered alien. A foreigner living in the U.S with a green card. Or as I usually put it, a denizen not a citizen.

Darat and Ausmerican,
Thanks for the quick and to-the-point responses. I probably could have answered this myself if I had given it a little thought. Seems "legal aliens" could fall into any of a number of different categories.

I wonder if you can use the mutation rate of these stories as a good predictor of how much truthiness they contain.

WHY do some people still believe Obama is not a natural born (US) citizen?

for any, or maybe all, of these reasons:

uneducated
semi-literate
didn't finish US high school
did finish US high school
belong to an organised "Christian" fundamentalist religion
don't think critically
prefer slogans to original thinking
blindly trust/follow their base instincts
practise "Kadavergehorsam"
are mental cowards (=afraid of realisations that might threaten their long-held beliefs)
do not like to read materials that require rational thinking
