They seem to confuse "conspiracies" with "conspiracy theories".

There's a lot of crap in there that either never existed or were at worst never proven. There's at least half a dozen non-existant CTs in there.

Meh... a few of these are worthy of re-examination by some people, IMO, but this list shoots itself in the foot two ways going for 33. Ooooh, it's Masonic! This will hurt them, using their magic number back against them. And of course it's a large number so you have to fill it with stupid crap like "new world order" which has never been more than a phrase in itself. And they can't even include some major conspiracies that pan out pretty well, like the framing of al Megrahi for Lockerbie?

Well, as far as Lockerbie is concerned, I'm still not convinced it's conspiracy rather than cock-up.

But it does seem as if several of these are less well-attested than that one. Very few of these really class as conspiracy theories to my way of thinking.

Rolfe.

There's also some weird inclusions like ULTRA and the Manhattan Project. If you're going to stretch the definition of "conspiracy theory" to "every military project that wasn't broadcast to the public ahead of time," then I'm surprised they didn't throw in D-Day while they were at it.

It depends on what you mean, while the Illuminati is somewhat true but not the way they play it out.

33 Conspiracy Theories That Turned Out To Be True, What Every Person Should Know...

This one should raise some eyebrows.

The Kennedy "conspiracy" theory that the House ruled on has been pretty much debunked.

Besides, I don't think they ever came to a conclusion about what kind of conspiracy it was, just that there was another shooter (who missed).

"July 20, 1944 Conspiracy to Assassinate Hitler" Erm...including this one really shows how bottom-of-the-barrel this list is. A group of guys agree to kill Hitler together. They try to kill Hitler. They fail. They get executed. What a mysterious world of unseen forces we live in!

Why wasn't the gunpowder plot in there?

"The Federal Reserve Bank" Eh? I know this is a favourite topic for some conspiracy theorists, but what makes it a conspiracy? The fact that it takes more than one person to run a bank and that it exists?

Is "The Government" a conspiracy too?

"New World Order" LOL!!!1!

After reading the article released by Cracked.com, I decided to update and revise their sloppy work. Their article had only 7. I can name 33 and I am planning on releasing a revised list soon with up to 50. The article I was insulted to read by the lack of information can be viewed here, but don't waste your time, all of that is in this article and more.
http://www.cracked.com/article_15974_p2.html

And again, I'll ask: in this list of "33 Conspiracy Theories", of the ones that we would agree were historical conspiracies, how many were actually the subject of any "theories" prior to their exposure? Were there lots of people running around, claiming that the Government was developing a "superweapon" prior to Hiroshima?

It's just another example of a CTer trying to borrow historical authority they don't deserve.

wowser

1. The Dreyfus Affair (OK, a conspiracy to blame an innocent man)
2. The Mafia (OK, a conspiracy, but not strictly in the meaning we usually associate with the term)
3. MK-ULTRA (OK, a conspiracy)
4. Operation Mockingbird (OK, a conspiracy)
5. Manhattan Project (Not really a conspiracy)
6. Asbestos Huh?
7. Watergate (OK, a conspiracy)
8. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study (OK, a conspiracy)
9. Operation Northwoods The memo exists but the plan was rejected.
10. 1990 Testimony of Nayirah ???
11. Counter Intelligence Programs Against Activists in the 60s (OK, a conspiracy)
12. The Iran-Contra Affair (OK, a conspiracy)
13. The BCCI Scandal (OK, a conspiracy)
14. CIA Drug Running in LA total bull hockey
15. Gulf of Tonkin Never Happened well, kinda. It’s more complicated than that.
16. The Business Plot ???
17. July 20, 1944 Conspiracy to Assassinate Hitler um, yeah, so? a conspiracy but like the Mafia, a private one
18. Operation Ajax OK, if you stretch the meaning of conspiracy a bit. All all covert actions "conspiracies"?
19. Operation Snow White (OK, a conspiracy but like the Mafia, a private one)
20. Operation Gladio not really a conspiracy, more a military contingency plan
21. The CIA Assassinates A Lot Of People (Church Committee) They did? They tried to kill several foreign leaders under orders from the President, but were not very successful. There were no death squads.
22. The New World Order jeeze….
23. Kennedy Assassination Oswald acting alone
24. 1919 World Series Conspiracy now we’re stretching it…
25. Karen Silkwood probably BS (I am reserving judgement)
26. CIA Drug Smuggling in Arkansas More BS
27. Bohemian Grove yet more BS
28. Operation Paperclip (OK, a conspiracy, if you take all classified operations to be a conspiracy)
29. The Round Table King Arthur?
30. The Illuminati fantasy
31. The Trilateral Commission more BS
32. Big Brother or the Shadow Government BS
33. The Federal Reserve Bank huh? If you mean that Jeckel island stuff, then BS

OK, not impressed. Less than a third of the entries might be considered a conspiracy, if you stretch the meaning of the term somewhat. More are total BS than real conspiracies..

16. The Business Plot ???

This is a conspiracy which may never have existed.

Apparently General Smedley Butler, AKA "The Fighting Quaker" or somewhat less impressively ""Old Gimlet Eye" or "Old Duckboard" had inklings of a plot by rich business men to overthrow FDR.

Did it happen? Dunno... don't really care especially when I heard it was something Gore Vidal obsessed over.

Someone once explained to me that it was the reason why FDR then had Huey Long assassinated or something like that...

The plot to kill Hitler was a conspiracy, but there was no conspiracy theory about it. A conspiracy theory would be "the CIA killed JFK and used Oswald as a patsy to cover it up." The plot to kill Hitler is well known, with a film about it being made as early as 1951. Where's the conspiracy theory?

They seem to confuse "conspiracies" with "conspiracy theories".

They also seem to confuse "conspiracies" with "not conspiracies at all" and "didn't actually happen/doesn't exist".

Given the number of completely real conspiracies that have been exposed, it's rather sad that they felt the need to include a load of complete bollocks just to bulk out the numbers. After all, the argument is presumably along the lines of "There have been some real conspiracies, therefore our current favourite conspiracy must also be real". Given that there certainly have been some real conspiracies, why the need to lie? If that argument were valid, it would work if they stuck with reality. And since it's obviously not valid, it doesn't matter how many extra conspiracies they make up.

Meh, what am I thinking. Why would I expect conspiracy nuts to make sense?

And even with that, they included the CIA as drug smugglers twice.

They missed Ceaser's assassination with it's famous quote: "Eat two Brutus"

Beat me to it.

I don't see any on their list.

The Bohemian Grove being on there just cracks me up. How is that a conspiracy, even if you stretch the meaning of the term?

I don't see any on their list.

Neither do I. This is the question I ask each time some CTist tries to make this argument. They have never been able to point to one case where the CT mindset actually contributed anything of significance in exposing a real-life conspiracy.

Because they worship an owl and eat babies. Don't you listen to Alex Jones?

Ah that one. I asked a buddy who is an FDR specialist about it and he said, and I quote, "Butler was a nut!".

A lot of lefties obssess over Butler's accusations. That no solid evidence other then Butler's word has ever proving these conspiracies does not seem to work.

I've color coded the list.

Blue: Real Government conspiracy of massive scope and massive impact
Purple: Real Government conspiracy of limited scope and limited impact
Teal: Not a conspiracy, just the government being secretive
Green: Not a conspiracy, just nutbags misunderstanding what the government does
Red: Real conspiracy by private people
Orange: Not a real conspiracy, just humans being douchebags
Brown: Only real in the imaginations of nutbags

1. The Dreyfus Affair
2. The Mafia
3. MK-ULTRA
4. Operation Mockingbird
5. Manhattan Project
6. Asbestos
7. Watergate
8. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study

33. The Federal Reserve Bank

As you can see they messed up almost the entire thing. I never once had to use blue.

Technically the The Tuskegee Syphilis Study, as venal as it was, wasn't really a conspiracy per say.

The perpetrators had every intention of publishing their findings when they were finished.

I would class this as "Not a real conspiracy, just humans being douchebags"

Also, you can make an argument that Asbestos should be red "Real conspiracy by private people." There was an industry group that funded a number of studies on the health effects of asbestos back in the 50's. They squashed the reports (except for one guy who saved them). this is why they lost so many of the early product liability lawsuits.

BTW if MK Ultra means the Ultra Intelligence in World War 2, to call that a conspiracy is just plain wrong.

And Notice all the Legit conspiracies were done by a very small group of people for very limited objectives..generallly involved with making a buck or covering butts. No massive plots to take over the world.

24. 1919 World Series Conspiracy now we’re stretching it

Ironic they list the Black Sox Scandel because the excellent movie made about it in 1988 "Eight Men Out" had Charlie Sheen as one of the featured actors.....

see, hes been a truthseeker since the late 80s :)

"Eight Men OUt' is one of the few really good movies Charlie Sheen has made......one of John Sayles' best.

I have a theory ,btw, that working with Oliver Stone so much is where Sheen caught the Conspiracy Bug.

As I posted on another forum:
Conpsiracy: "Hey, we all have similar ideologies, how about we work together to accomplish a common nefarious goal?"
Conspiracy theory: "Hey, we all have different ideologies, how about we work together anyway to accomplish a nefarious goal for one of us?"

"Eight Men OUt' is one of the few really good movies Charlie Sheen has made......one of John Sayles' best.

One of the very few movies I walked out on. I just didn't care a hoot for any of the characters and I knew how the story ended. I loved the book though.

I only included it as such because there was a conspiracy to keep it secret while the study was ongoing. Kinda a gray area I'll admit.

I wasn't aware of that. I did know that there was a concerted lobbying effort against banning asbestos on the grounds that the alternatives were too expensive that was very effective and kept it legal for many years longer than it should have been. I'm still baffled that it was the preferred option right up until the day it was banned leaving some buildings, like the WTC, with asbestos used only in part of the building. How did those building contractors live with themselves?

Anyone want to suggest some blue type conspiracies?
