Twittering TAM 8

Last year I cobbled together a collection of Twitter apps that gave people the ability to post what they were up to outside of the conference so others could seek them out and join in. OK, 99% of the messages were "We're in the bar" but evidence suggests that this was still helpful to those who didn't know which direction to turn after leaving the registration desk.

So, let's do it again.

Those who don't really care about the mechanics of how things work might want to skip the next couple paragraphs. You can pick up reading later in the post.

The Twitter Apps
I used grouptweet.com to take any direct message sent to the TAM7 account and bounce it back to everyone who followed TAM7. For this to work, however, it was necessary for TAM7 to in turn follow everyone who followed that account. Because I did not want to add all these people manually, I used FollowTweet (now called SocialOomph) to automatically follow anyone who followed TAM7.

Overall, things worked pretty well. The downside, however, is that spammers occasionally leaked in and I wouldn't know it until they sent out something to the group.

Does anyone know of a new or better way to have a closed group like this within the Twitterverse? The requirement is for someone to be able to send out a message that goes back out to a select group of people. Yes, this could also be accomplished by simply hashtagging posts with something like #tamBS and then people could constantly search for that term, but that isn't nearly as direct as the other method.

The TAM7 Account Name
Obviously TAM7 is behind us, but it's not an easy matter to simply rename the account TAM8 because -- believe it or not -- someone already has that name!

Personally, I have no problem leaving it at TAM7. It's very short, easy to type when sending a direct message, and us cool kids who are in the know will understand why it's called TAM7 even five years from now. I am, however, completely open to new ideas. If you can come up with a more generic ID that 1) people can remember easily if you tell it to them in the elevator; 2) relates to TAM in some way, especially the Las Vegas TAM, and 3) is actually available, let me know.

But please, don't just start tossing out random names. Check on Twitter to see if they are actually free. If you find a good one, PM it to me.

At this point, however, I'm strongly inclined to just leave it as is.

The Spammers
Oh, the spammers. I started going through the list of followers to weed out the spammers and porn sites and quickly saw that it was going to a daunting task. What I'm thinking of doing at this point is simply dumping TAM7's entire list of followed/followers and asking everyone to re-follow. Given that it will take you about 20 seconds to refollow, I don't see this as overly burdensome in exchange for having the clean slate. Again, I'm open to suggestions about any better way to do this.

Getting in on the Action
If you want to be part of the TAM7 group, please don't do anything right now, since there's a good chance I'm going to dump everyone at some point in the near future (see above). Watch for an update a couple months before TAM to see what you have to do.
This is, however, a good time to restate the intent of this group: It is for keeping people in the loop with things that are going on OUTSIDE of the actual conference. It is NOT for twittering a blow-by-blow account of what each of the TAM speakers are saying and what color Phil Plait's shirt is.
****************

There are people out there who know a hell of a lot more about Twitter than I do, so please give me your feedback. Remember, we need to keep any process simple so all the people who are in the bar can play along.

I loved it and I welcome it's return. Perhaps a more generic re-usable name like TwitTAM

Yeah, if you were to use TAMTwit, somebody might take it personally.

ReRandi?

I wanted to add that I didn't really "get" twitter until using it at TAM. Using it at a conference was awesome. That had the side effect of realizing how much it sucks not having it at NECSS, being in a basement with no wifi or cell access was a bummer.

It's going to be even more crazy this year at TAM with all the new friends I have since TAM7

I just told the wife in no uncertain terms that I was not going to miss TAM again. I've missed the last two, and that's two too many. I don't have a solution for your Trick or Tweet problem though.

Since Tam8 is taken, how about Tam_8, or TamEight, both of which are still available.

Since there are multiple geographic TAMS now, how about TAMamerica (available) TamNorthAmerica (available), TamLasVegas (available, but TAMvegas is not), VegasTam (available), or 8TAM (available) .

I think it'd be fine to leave it as TAM7. Starting a sequence of numbers could easily be difficult in years to come.

I was a fan of the feed. Things like "we're going to dinner @ X" was nice, and easily allows people to coordinate events & meetups. "d TAM7 Leaving for Yard of Ale soon. Meet @ DelMar in 15 min if you want to come" is short, direct, and means that you don't have to SMS everyone.

Hooray!

At this point, I feel that if we're going to pick a TAM twitter name that will remain the same for all future TAMs, then it should be something like TamLasVegas (or how about TamLV?).

One more important thing to consider about a new Twitter ID: Most people are typing this in on a very tiny keyboard on a very tiny phone. Brevity is a huge plus, as is the absense of any special characters such as an underscore.

That's probably the main reason I'm leaning toward just keeping TAM7. You just have to type in "d tam7" and you're all set.

But, we still have a few months, so the idle brainstorming can continue.

==========

Comments on names that have been tossed out:

Already taken: TwiTAM, TweeTAM, TAMusa

Permutations of TAM8, 8TAM, etc: My hesitation with these is that next year we'll be going through the same exercise for TAM 9. If it's going to change from TAM7, it should become something more generic that will last a few years.

Geographic: A valid idea, but all the available ones are a bit lengthy. Something like TAMLV would have been perfect, but that evil Tammy in Las Vegas jumped in ahead of us.

reRandi: Not bad, not bad...

Why make it specific to any location? I doubt any TAM will ever be held at the same time as any other TAM, so lets pick something that can be used for all TAMs, no matter where in the world they might be held.

How about TAMerrific?

Considering the Amazing Meetings are expanding, what about a name that reflects the location, such as tam_vegas (available). I know this doesn't obey the special characters rule, but I think it would be handy to have an account for each country (UK, Australia, Switzerland).

tamvegas, tamveg, tam8LV,

I don't like punctuation in the nick. Also, keep it as short as possible, of course.

the characters in the name count as part of the 140 character limit, so you need a good name that is as short as possible.

TAM7 is fine. I strongly recommend keeping it 'as-is'. At the heart of it, the actual letters in the name do not matter, just that people attending/following remotely know what it is.

I too like RSL's idea, but it is indeed WAY too long to type on a phone.

I also agree that if we change the name, we should pick something generic to TAM so folks at the other geographic TAMs can make use of it too.

A few ideas...

One that only a Brit would love: TAMnoy (available)

TAMinfo (available)
AmazMeet (available)
TAMeet (available)

Thanks again for doing this, DI!

TAMinfo is pretty damned good... only three characters longer, but no digits (which, on some keyboards requires an extra function key press). I'm going to mull this one over for a few hours before I do anything drastic like switching it.

Also, the group forwarding function is currently turned OFF. Right now I don't have time to watch this account closely and boot off the spammers as they pop up. If the forwarding thing was turned on, it would just be propagating spam all over the place, and no one ever likes that. I'll turn it on for realzese when we get closer to TAM.

Annoyingly, TAMinfo still does not show up if you search for it. I did, however, learn that this is a known bug that Twitter is working on so I suspect it will be OK in plenty of time for TAM.

You can still get to the right spot by searching for TAM7... even though once you get there it correctly lists TAMinfo.
