It has been banned in Scottish schools for almost two generations, and the Scottish Government just announced plans to ban parents from hitting their bairns. We are getting there in Scotland, if slowly.

Got the scud (as we called it in the 80s) plenty of times. Never did anyone any harm and acted as an effective deterrent for many. People are just too soft nowadays.

Growing up after corporal punishment was outlawed in public schools, I never experienced it, except on Thursdays, when we had catechism. I swear, some of those nuns and priests were definitely of the school that you had to have the devil beaten out of you. I've sometimes wondered if that's why some of the pedophilia scandals involving priests took so long to come out; because as kids we expected them to physically abuse us.

This thread has certainly triggered me. It is just another example of how my parochial school education has damaged me. I often find myself reliving these incidents that have harmed me. I have never shared this story outside of the confessional before.

When I was in high school I had Sister Angelica for Chemistry. My lab partner was this very cute shy girl named Becky. Sister Angelica mistreated Becky awfully. Becky could never do anything right as far as Sister was concerned. She always picked on her in class and tried to embarrass her besides grading her harder than she did other students. One day I spoke to Becky about it and she said that Sister Angelica and her dad knew each other before before Sister went into the convent and their relationship had ended badly. Sister Angelica was taking out her hostility toward Becky's dad on Becky.

One day Becky came into class without her assignment. Sister noticed and told Becky to come up to the front of the class. The tension was palatable and you hear a pin drop. Sister berated Becky for a long time saying she was a lazy naughty student who needed to be punished. Sister told Becky to bend over her desk as she fetched her tawse from a desk drawer. The class was bewildered. Normally corporal punishment was only doled out in private, usually done in the front office by Father O'Brien. Becky was going to get it right in front of the entire class. Sister walked next to Becky and said "I shouldn't ever have to do this but you leave me no choice!" She lifted Becky's skirt up lowered her underwear right in front of the entire class!

Becky's bottom was bare and completely exposed to the prying eyes of every student in the Chemistry class. The bent posture only made her more aware of the vulnerable position she was in. Sister really laid it on and Becky was forced to perform a humiliating bottom wiggling exposition with ineffective complaints of "please stop sister, oohh, ouch..." I felt terrible for Becky being humiliated like this and considered turning away but then I thought it would be best for Becky if I kept an eye on the proceedings in case witnesses were ever needed.

I should never have been exposed to any of the many incidents I have had to witness. Maybe I should sue?

First, I wish to acknowledge all the support my fellow posters have shown toward me concerning my traumatic experience. Your posts have been important toward my healing. Unfortunately my trauma didn't end with Becky's humiliation. Almost immediately after Becky's experience a spate of appalling behavior by some of the prettiest and most stuck up female students started to occur. It started with Nancy and Theresa. Sister Angelica was walking past Nancy and noticed a note sticking out of her chemistry book that clearly referenced some of the school's faculty. Sister read the note. My recollection was the note said...

"Nancy, did you hear what happened in the rectory last night? The nuns were talking and sister Mary said that when she was cleaning Father O'Brian's room she found some porno magazines. When asked what she did then Sister Mary said she threw them away. Sister Kate then said she found some condoms in Father's room the last time she was cleaning his room. When asked what she did Sister Kate said she poked holes in the condoms. After Sister Kate said this Sister Angelica promptly fainted."

Theresa foolishly signed the note. Sister Angelica's face turned red with rage. She brought Nancy and Theresa to the front of the room and put them through the same ordeal as Becky had gone through. Soon, in the coming days, many of the girls were found to be harboring contraband of all sorts. It became like the Spanish Inquisition during chemistry class. The girls were all scared to go into chemistry class. Some of their knees actually shook.

Despite all the years that have gone by I still am affected by this ordeal.
