Thousands of birds die for no obvious reason. Any ideas?

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said Saturday more than 1,000 dead blackbirds fell from the sky in Beebe.

The agency said its enforcement officers began receiving reports about the dead birds about 11:30 p.m. Friday. The birds fell over a one-mile area of the city, and an aerial survey indicated that no other dead birds were found outside of that area, officials said.

By any chance, did people in the area all lose consciousness at the same time, and while unconscious, have visions of future events?

BEEBE, Ark. (AP) -- Wildlife officials are trying to determine what caused more than 1,000 blackbirds to die and fall from the sky over an Arkansas town.

Now this is just weird, because when I was driving home from work New Year's Eve afternoon, at one point I drove past a huge flock of raven-type birds. Seriously, it was more than I had ever seen before in one spot, and I went "WTF?" to myself at the time.

And get this - it was right next to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum!

Aliens passing overhead accidentally turned on their "kill all birds near the ship" field?

They all ate at a local McDonald's trashbin all their short, greasy, fat-lovin' lives?

They all just heard Ronnie James Dio died?

Thousands of birds die for no obvious reason. Any ideas?

I'm not entirely sure where to post this.

Quote:
Arkansas game officials hope testing scheduled to begin Monday will solve the mystery of why up to 5,000 blackbirds fell from the sky just before midnight New Year’s Eve.

The birds — most of which were dead — were found within a one-mile area of Beebe, about 40 miles northeast of Little Rock, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said. The blackbirds fell over about a one-mile area, the commission said in a statement.

As of Saturday, between 4,000 and 5,000 blackbirds had been found dead, said Keith Stephens with the commission.
The two most logical explanations right now:

-“the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail.”
-New Year's Eve fireworks freaked the birds out so badly they all had heart attacks.

JREF folks are pretty smart people, so I wanted to hear your opinions on this. It's only a matter of time before someone goes "THIS IS JUST LIKE "SIGNS"!! OMG UFOS!!"

I did bake off a pretty rank nether biscuit about 30 minutes before the New Year.

I do live west of there, so it is possible that the prevailing winds wafted my flatus cloud into Arkansas.

(In all reality, I'm more leaning towards cloud-to-cloud lightning. Or Nikolai Tesla.)

The birds seem to be physically damaged, so leaning toward some kind of atmospheric thing like hail.

Or maybe they were all sucked up by a tornado from a farm in Kansas, taken to OZ, and then dropped in Arkansas.

Or maybe something alien and nefarious like the first few seconds of 'Mars Attacks'.

Why not wait for the necropsy report to help us decide?

Given that parts of the midWest saw freakish weather--tornadoes, snow, hail, lightning--that same night, something nasty in the clouds seems a good bet. It should be possible to determine if they are local birds or not. Remember that it is possible for a tornadic system to suck birds out of trees in location 1 and dump them later, far away, in location 2. Not going to go through the work of tracking down the weather patterns over that time period, but that's the direction my thoughts immediately trend.

I suppose being sucked high enough could in iteself kill birds like blackbirds, which are usually not venturing into high altitudes. Then add high wind-forces and hail.

So, with lightning being given as one of the main guesses in the original article: Can lightning travel between birds and cover a flock that size?

Did the news report mention the tornadic activity in the area at that time? The birds could have been caught in an updraft or down draft and either suffocated at extreme height or been slammed.
