TAM 9 Poker tournament

well, as registration has opened for TAM 9, it's probably a good time to think about organizing this year's poker tournament.

The overall schedule can be found here:

http://www.amazingmeeting.com/program

As with last year, the best time seems to be Thursday, just before the reception. Maybe starting at 5:00pm. That gives us 2.5 hours before the reception, so most players will be done with lots of time to spare to attend the reception.

I could also be convinced that Saturday night, starting at 7:00pm, could work.

Any other opinions?

My only worry is that some people may not arrive until Thursday night or sometime Friday... I'd prefer Saturday night. But since there are events happening that night, I understand if you all want something else.

Well, conflicts are always a problem with TAM, there's just too much to do! So we'll see what fits best for the most people.

We could also consider having two tournaments - would anyone be up for one Sunday afternoon? I'm there until Monday evening, myself, and wouldn't say no to another go round.

The tournament went pretty long last year, I got a sense the dealer was pretty frustrated and they ended up convincing us to split the pot after heads up went a little long. I guess thats a "problem" with us rationally minded people, we tend to play pretty conservatively!

Also, is it possible to limit the game to only TAM attendees (and maybe their travelling companions)? There were a few locals in the tournament last year. They were nice enough guys, but they did play pretty aggressively and the game didn't feel as friendly at times.

Well, we could limit it, but the casino likes to fill the tables, so the best way is to get a lot of the TAM people to sign up.

So it's looking like Thursday again. I'll keep an eye on the schedule, and figure out a good starting time. I suspect it will be earlier than last year, though, from what I've seen so far.

Yeah, I didn't get a ticket to Rebecca's game show (at 9PM), figuring I would be playing poker.

My plan was to try to avoid overlapping other events as much as possible, so we'll probably be running it from 5 or 5:30 until 7:30, when the reception starts. with 2-2.5 hours, most players will be done before the reception starts, and it's almost certain we'll all be done before the reception ends.

good news. I know I said I was tentative in the PM Horatius, but I made plans and even bought my tickets so not so tentative any more.

Thursday is much better for me, since after TAM 8 I started listening to the SGU and bought a ticket for their dinner on Saturday.

I just hope my plane isn't delayed as I am getting in about 3pm so too much delay and I may be late.

I don't play, but my friend "Bad Beat Bob" is interested in joining the tournament for (I think) his third year in a row. I told him about this thread, and he wrote:
Ahh, Fred, a pox upon you. You know how to hook my interest. Why yes, of course I'd play the TAM poker tournament again. No date preference, though there's good energy playing it on the first night. Also, that seems traditional. And yes, I need you to add me to the list. Nickname: Bad Beat Bob.
I might stake him with a side-bet six pack of beer if you're doing that again.

Once again, there will be a bounty on Horatius' head of a six pack of a locally brewed adult beverage. The way this works is Horatius and I each bring a six pack to the poker room. If I am knocked out before him, he gets my six pack and whoever beat me got his. If other people want in, or if we want to turn this into a general bounty, no problem. Either way, I am bringing alcohol.

Speaking of which, Horatius, we have a plethora of good breweries around here, as well as a local cider mill that makes aw-haw-hawsome hard cider (my favorite being the apple/black current version). Do you have a preference in what you will see handed off to someone other than you?

Define "around here", and I'll take a look.

On that theme, there's a new micro brewery here in Ottawa, that makes something I think you someone might like.....

I am sad. My favorite cidery got bought out by some huge conglomerate and they changed the product lineup and I can't find it in any local stores. I may drive up to their tasting room this weekend in the hope they still sell direct.

Do we have a fixed start time? I will be driving in, and will do my best to get there in time.

Just got off the phone with Joe D, so we're good to go for Thursday at 5:30. $50 buy in with a $5 add-on going to the JREF.

I told him we'd probably have about 30 people, so sign up now, and let others know about it!
