Why does he have to belong to one? Mandela and the ANC are far to the left of either the Democrats or Republicans.

yeap, it's no coincidence the first country he visited as president was cuba, to personally thank castro for his help in the fight for freedom, while the united states still had him in the terrorist list.

if mandela had been american he may have been considered a communist and probably assassinated in the south before he could do any damage.

cheers

It's a bit like the arguments whether Jesus would have been "left wing" (concern for the poor) or "right wing" (religion). Both concepts would have been totally foreign to him.

His stance on property rights would put him way to the left.

I don't think either party would want him. Hence, he'd be an independant...or possibly a Sith Lord.

Oh dear, would his Light Assegai be a better weapon than my light saber? The longer reach might be a tactical issue ... keeping my rotor options wide open, am I!

[Jesus'] stance on property rights would put him way to the left.

Which would, in turn, lead to a poverty-stricken nation, with other, wealthier, devil-worshipping nations curiously being able to provide much better quality of life for their citizenry. How embarrassing for Jesus. I wonder what his memetic narrative rationalization would be.

WWJMNRB?

Actually, Jesus would have been more libertarian -- leave other people the holy hell alone and lead by example instead of jamming your fist down others' throats.

I regularly point out Jesus said for you to help your neighbor, not for you to threaten your neighbor with jail if he doesn't help your other neighbor. People don't like having the core of their political beliefs shot down vis-a-vis their religious beliefs. But that's their problem, not mine.

Dude! Read the Bible for a change. Rome provided a better standard of living only for the oligarchs. There could be no latifunda under Levitical law.

It would take me more time than I have available to find the exact passage, but Jesus did rail against the money-lenders and land speculators who conspired to grab the land out from under the peasant farmers and reduce them to paupers on the land.

History is not on your side.

no, you are wrong...
signed,
one who has read it several times.

Tell ya what, sport, Religion forum is ---------------> that way.

And no, you are wrong.

Try this, just once.

Read the Bible with your head.

Then, read it with your heart.

It's like two different books.

Neither, he would have been a Black Panther, or some other variant of radical, black, revolutionary. And he probably would have been assassinated by the FBI or some whacko right wing militant group, like a lot of the other successful black leaders in America.
