TAM9 In Memoriam reel - need your help

Last year at TAM, I did an Oscar-style "In Memoriam" reel for skepticism-related people who had died in the last year or so. There was one reel for skeptics and one for non-skeptics. Many of you might not have seen it as it ran on the screens in the main hall during the breaks. You can view the presentations online at my Skeptools blog.

I'm going to do this again this year for TAM9, and I've been collecting obituaries during the year to this end. But some of the personalities relevant to skepticism are admittedly obscure, and the obits often don't make the newspaper, so I could use your help.

Here's what I have so far. Let me know who I've missed, and if you think anyone in these lists isn't relevant enough, or whatever.

Paul the Psychic Octopus.
I think that is a bit unfair to include him in the 'non-skeptics' list. He, as far as I can recall, didn't predict anything. It was the nutters around him that made the story.
Mostly in good humor, of course.

Well, I'm not sure it would be correct to call him a skeptic, either.

Actually, as they run at TAM, the only difference between the two reels is that the skeptic list says "In Memoriam" and the non-skeptic list says "Passages", since we're not memorializing people who promoted nonsense.

Martin Gardner, who never made a personal appearance at TAM, was mentioned several times, and some of his memorabilia was auctioned, if I remember right.

Martin died May 22, 2010.

Yes, Martin Gardner ran in the reel last year at TAM8 (you can see them at my blog).

Because it runs at TAM, I collect dates from July to July. But Gardner looms so large, and so many people keep suggesting him, I might have to overlap a little and run him again this year.

D'Oh! Sorry, I didn't check your link (and I missed TAM). I did see the name "Gardner" in one of your lists, and it wasn't Martin (who died at around the same time), and that's what prompted my message.

Wow. Quite a list! I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who you haven't already included.

If I want to get Rebecca on the list, how much notice do you need?

Blatant thread bump. Gotta put the slide show together in the next couple days for the TAM9 AV people.

Last chance to tell me who I'm missing.

Tough call, but it may be appropriate to consider a mention of Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who challenged many of the conventional views with respect to death and dying. Although I found myself disagreeing with Jack on many points, I agreed with his views that dying is a very personal matter, so the decision about how to die ought not necessarily be decided by an outsider such as a government or a church, and that persons who choose to hasten their own ends may be acting utterly rationally. Jack died on 3 June 2011.

Still, Paul was not a person, nor did he promote anything. He just moved around in his tank. I suggest a third category: "helpless victims of nonsense promoted by others."

Hey folks. I'm putting together the slide shows for TAM, and I ran across two people who I just CANNOT find photos for. These two people, specifically:

Ion Alexis Will, died December 26, 2010
Fortean Times contributor & co-author of "The Great Caper"

Sean C. Marshall died February 13, 2011
Founded school of Chinese medicine in US

Is your Google Fu better than mine? Find a photo of either of these men and show me where you got it.

Thanks!

Sorry, Krelnik, I struck out on both of them.

Thanks for trying! I think we're just gonna roll with no pictures for those two fellows.

I did pretty well, all in all. The obits will run as a slide show in the breaks at TAM, and I'll post them during or shortly after the event.

If you'd like to see the final results of the research done in this thread, I've posted the slides over at my Skeptools blog.

Who are slides 3, 4, 14, 15, 26 of the passages slides? Any reason why they don't have captions?

Dammit, I need a quality assurance assistant. I have no idea why those captions don't display properly. I tested those slide shows over and over in PowerPoint.

ETA: I re-uploaded the second set of slides, it is fixed now.

Thanks for pointing that out. Wondering why nobody pointed it out before, either here or on my blog. Hmmm.
