Twittering TAM 9

Despite my best efforts to ruin everything for everyone, it appears that TAM 9 is actually going to happen. Therefore, it is time for my annual post about how to use Twitter to keep up with everything that is happening outside of the conference itself.

Allow me to clarify that last point: Everything contained within this post is about tracking the after-hour (or before-hour, I guess) social activities at TAM 9. This has absolutely nothing to do with any other Twitter feeds that might be broadcasting details what the speakers are saying. In fact, if any of that kind of chatter starts to spill over to this list, I'll send Scrut to have a talk with you.

The system we have been using for the past few years makes use of the GroupTweet service. What this does is essentially create a private group within Twitter that we can post to, and those tweets are only seen by the people who follow this account. This keeps your TAM-related tweets restricted to this group; none of your other followers will see your tweets (unless, of course, they're also following this account).

The process is very simple:

1. Follow TAMInfo on Twitter. I have a service running that will automatically follow you back, though it can take a few hours to happen. If your account is protected, please make sure to allow TAMInfo when you see it.

2. If you have something to send to the group, you do so with a direct message. For example:

d taminfo We're all meeting in the Del Mar in 10 minutes.

3. Within a couple minutes GroupTweet will rebroadcast this and everyone who follows TAMInfo will see it.

That's it! No #hashtags are required. Just follow those simple steps and it will work fine for you.

Right now I have the GroupTweet function turned OFF so as to keep the list clean. I'll turn it on the weekend before TAM starts and will keep it going for a few days after it all wraps up.

This is very cool! It worked great last year, but I don't remember - do the messages show in tweet deck on the home screen or the direct messages screen?

Here's an example of how to use it:

d taminfo Rebecca just passed out at the bar and threw up all over herself. Everyone come look before she wakes up!!! LULZ!!

Allender: The messages show in the main timeline in your Twitter client, not as direct messages.

Everyone: keep in mind that this is for messages that people can ACT ON, like the Del Mar example above. Going somewhere. Meeting someplace. Doing something.

Regular twitter stuff, like "I like that analogy that Shermer just made about parapsychology" should just be sent in the normal way. Don't forget to hashtag them #TAM9!

Here are two excellent examples of how to use it from last year:

via @Ziggy66: anyone like to share a cab to the airport at 4:00 AM?
via @Austinopterix: Want a skepchick party pin? I'm in Del Mar and have one to give.

Here are a couple that (IMHO) are not so great:

via @davidebrown: Julia is the greatest moderator EVER
via @Malfeitor: "Hellooooo!"

No offense to davidebrown or Malfeitor, but that kind of stuff is fine for your own feed but doesn't belong on TAMInfo (IMHO). Additional apologies if you were just testing at the time, sorry to single you out.

I should probably use CoTweet to schedule a tweet that fires off every 10 minutes saying "There are people in the bar."

Unbelievable though it may seem, there are certain times of the day when that isn't true.

Its probably too late to get this info in the registration packets, but perhaps the JREF could send it in an email to all TAM registrants? The more people there are using this service, the better it works, and I think were at the point where a majority of TAM attendees don't read the forum.

Ahem, it's "Tweeting TAM 9", not "Twittering", okay?!

"Tweet" is the verb. "Twitter" is the noun. Got it?!

Go to the App Store and search for "Twitter"--there are a number of apps for it. I just use the regular Twitter app, which is free and works fine. Once installed you just sign in with your username and password (assuming you've already signed up for Twitter. If you haven't, I think it will let you set up an account as well). It's pretty easy to use after that.

I may give Tweetdeck a try. Anyway, here's the page for the "official" iPhone Twitter app (you can also get it from the App store, as mentioned above):

I am currently using the Official Twitter app. on my Android.

I have found that some third party apps. (including "Peep" which came with the phone) tend to break more often than the Official one: On occasion, the log in won't work, or when it does, it can't find new Tweets.
I Have not had any significant issues with the Official app., though.

Peep was fine, but Twitter have apparently changed something with their security which means it, and a few other 3rd party apps, no longer work.

Does the official app push new updates to the notification bar? I liked that about Peep.

I'm following TAMInfo now, but apparently nothing is happening. Not "Randi shopping for little travel toothpaste". Not "DJ booked a dog-sitter, finally!" Not "Did anyone remember to ask Hrab to submit his jokes for review by Hal?"

Is there anybody out there?

The GroupTweet function hasn't been turned on yet so there's nothing going on.

There's also the #TAM9 hashtag, which is getting busier as we get closer to the start.

Yes. When using the app (not merely the widget), click your phone's Menu button, then click Settings. You will see settings for the notification bar in there.

Hmm. That shouldn't happen. Post their names here and we'll figure it out.

On a slightly off-topic topic, is there a list of twitter names of attendees somewhere? Or has someone set up a TAM9 attendee twitter list that we can follow?

This sounds like a useful service, but what about for those of us who don't take part in the Twitters? Will there be some kind of carrier pigeon backup plan? If not, could we have somebody "think" the tweets out to those of us with psychic abilities?

The backup plan is to hang around with other attendees, with at least one of them owning a device that can read the feed, at any given time.

That's what I had to resort to doing, last year, since my Smart Phone was shipped out too late for me to get it in time for TAM8. You know, it wasn't really that bad.

This year, of course, I'll be one of the ones with one of them Smart Phones.

ETA: I will also be bringing along a Tablet PC, though I might not bring it everywhere.
