Final word on research into Alt.Med?

This is just a quick post to highlight a nice quotation from Steve Novella at
ScienceBasedMedicine.

"Kind attention plus X makes people feel better, just as well as kind attention alone. Great. We do not need to study this with every possible form of unscientific intervention filling in for X. And it is deceptive and unscientific to suggest that whatever fills in for X has some value because of this equation."

Every time some numpty enthusiast for SCAM appears to tell us about the latest study for some useless therapy this should be thrown at them.

But how do you know which therapy is useless and which is not, if you throw this to everyone without researching their claims.

The key is in the implied assertion that science is obliged to test X, "whatever fills in for X".

Implied is the absence of judgement SCAM supporters make about prior probability, which should be based on the broad-knowledge base of scientific theory and experiment.

It is not so simple, treatments vary in their success rates, both the placebo ones and what we would call scientific ones. Just because something is scientific does not make it effective, it might when working with robots, but the human body and mind is annoyingly more diverse and unfathomable, one size rarely fits all.
