A recent claim has been making the rounds on the Internet that an asteroid that is 2.5 miles wide will hit the earth on September 23rd 2015, on the day of atonement. Here is a link to one video that claims this /watch?v=A4c0NS4jLNA (apologie, international internationalskeptics will not allow me to post a live link)

My thoughts:

-Does not bother to cite sources and only says a friend of a friend says this.

-Large time window yet somehow know where exactly it will hit

- Astronomy is one of the only areas of science which has a large community of amateurs, if this was true it would be all over the Internet all from independent sources.

Would like to hear anyones commentary who may have more knowledge on the subject than I.

I've put that down on my calendar as well. Creates a dilemma for me. I have a job project due after this date; should I stop working on it?

Is it just me or are most doomsday scenarios scheduled for September? I feel like every summer there is a new video about the end of the world coming sometime in September.

If that were true, astronomers would've told us about it already. There should be some pretty obvious data at this point, if something that large was definitely coming for us. Your last point is right on the money.

And welcome.

Today I've seen one thread about the rapture occurring on Sep. 23 as well as this one about an asteroid strike. This surprises me, as I'm pretty sure the world ended in 2012 (remember the Mayan calendar thing?) and nobody noticed.

I have been reading up on this nuttiness and there are CTers asserting that astronomers are being assassinated in order to keep the whole thing secret. That, of course, is textbook CTism. Someone asks a rational question and another layer of craziness is placed on top of the previous craziness. In the end one has a tower of craziness that not even micro-thermite can bring down.

Yes. I am not sure which idea came first (meteor or Second Coming) but they seem intrinsically tied together now. I do love the "Issac Newton" calculation that allowed the Bible prophecies to calculate the date.

Well, the next logical step is to name every astronomer who has died in the last few months and claim that their deaths are suspicious.

What about the nutter who claimed that the last Olympics were really going to be just that ?

Ugh.

I believe I heard her say, " 200 miles off the coast of Venuzuala and Brazil".

Um, those two countries do not share coasts on the same body of water. Might as well say "200 miles off the coast of Mexico and Canada."

Then there are the truly science illiterate musings of "gravitational events" occurring because this object is incoming, which morphs into magnetic events. Tie in Jade Helm, and a Blood Moon and of course The Rapture.
Can now hardly wait for Sept 29th.

Venezuela and Brazil do share coasts on the same body of water. Granted there are 800 miles of coastline separating these two countries, but they do both have mid-Atlantic coastlines.

There are already websites tying in a blood moon sequence with this event. The woosters beat you to it.

Ack, I stand corrected as I now see that Venuzuala does extend a bit east of Trinidad.

But your underlying point stands. It is impossible for a meteor strike to be "200 miles off the coast of Venezuela and Brazil."

Oy! Did she say a Blood Moon on Sept 28? I don't feel like watching again but google tells me that the Blood Moon is on the 13th, a lunar eclipse is on the 28th.

Typical CT connecting dots,,,,,,,,, and water stains, coffee grounds, and fly specks.

Yeah, that was my original thought, that it struck me that there are a few countries between those two, and that Brazil faced generally NE while Ven. faced north.

Its almost like she didn't get a single 'fact' correct. Go figure!

This happens to be true. I am an astronomer, and fear of assassination is preventing me from divulging an event three months from now in which we're all going to die anyway.

I have no idea what she said. I just know that some websites are claiming that the event falls in a series of blood moons.

Considering that many small pieces fall during a year have they earmarked the ounces this 'mighty messenger' will weigh?

:)

To be fair, we haven't had another (summer games, at least) since London. Their wish might yet come true, but the downside is, if they've bet on the world ending, collecting the winnings might be problematic.

So now they are swiping from Roland Emmerich's movies...specifically 2012 where scientists are killed off to keep the end of the world secret.
And from the stupidist of all of Emmrich's stupid movies at that.

The Rapture on Sep.23 story is definently merging with the Civilization will be destroyed by a meteor swarm on Sep. 23 story in the Wackoverse.

I think you about covered it. :) Welcome to the forum.

Do you know about the Near Earth Object website at JPL/NASA?

http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/neo/groups.html

http://spaceweather.com/ has a list of the pending close encounters. Bottom right side of the page. September isn't on the list yet, but it can be found on the NASA site.

Here's a lovely table for your viewing pleasure: http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/neo...rows=500&fmt=full&action=Display+Table&show=1

The table below shows 390 close-Earth approaches by NEOs (Near-Earth Objects) sorted by date.
Only those close approaches within 5 LD (Lunar Distances) occurring on or after 2015-Jun-12 UT are included.
If you sort them by "Close-Approach Distance" (either nominal or minimum), you'll see none of them are scheduled to hit us until 2072.

Asteroid 2012 TC4 will be nearby in 2017 (between around 13,200 and 433,200 kilometres), but it's just a piddly little thing between 10 and 20 metres across.

My money's on asteroid 2010 RF12[/urkl], but it's only 7 metres wide and won't be here until 2095 -- but that's SEPTEMBER of 2095.; )

If you desperately need an asteroid to approach us specifically on 23rd of September, you'll have to wait until 2054 when asteroid 2007 TD comes by. (Remember that name, it's important!) You could also wait until 2060 for asteroid 101955 Bennu, or 2066 when asteroid 2011 SR5 comes by, both also on 23rd September (coincidence? of course not! it's space reptiles, of course).

Back to asteroid 2007 TD: That's the one some people thought would hit the Earth on 23rd September 2011! Some of you may recall the youtube video from the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFzrwZHHbVc I mean, hey, it had 8,000 views, right? :heh: If you want to see where 2007 TD will be this year, I think there's an orbital viewer applet (which I can't view myself) here: http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2007 TD;orb=1
