Flat Earth 'theory' taking over the ... 'globe'?

There has been a marked increase in Flat Earth videos and activities on Youtube and elsewhere on the web since late 2015.

It seems that all conspiracy nuts are converging to this ultimate conspiracy theory: the earth is flat, centered around the North Pole, Antarctica is the outer rim and beyond it is just a continued ice sheet. The Sun, Moon and all stars and planets are always above the earth, they only appear to go down because they vanish from our sight due to distance (?), the Sun is just 5,000km above the earth and 55km in diameter and only lights half the earth at a time because it projects its light as a spot light, surrounding the disc always between the Tropics. Different angles the Sun is seen in derive from the short distance between Earth and Sun.

It's all over now, every single Antarctica video is full of Flat Earthers saying the videos are fake and/or only show the Outer Antactica Rim and there is no South Pole. Amundsen-Scott base is a hoax.

All satellites and space travel is fake. Stars and Solar System planets are just points of light on the Dome that covers the Earth's disc.

I find it amazing because it is the logical consequence of all conspiracy mentality: trust nothing, reject all evidence that goes against your theory, eagerly believe any shred of proof that corroborates what you want to be true.

Now they are hunting each other all over the youtubes, claiming all 9/11 Truthers, Creationists, Apollo Hoax believers, etc. are shills and deluded UNLESS they also accept the irrefutable proof that the earth is flat and immobile. Alex Jones is being called a shill.

Stephen Molinaux (a capitalist anarchist and thus also not entirely rational IMO) receives a call from a Flat Earther and deals with it very calmly and rationally, a must watch to learn how to handle pseudo-science insanity:

All Round Earthers are seen as pawns of the Globalists (this name takes on a new dimension) paid by George Soros and Hillary Clinton, agents of NASA and the United Nations (whose logo is pretty much the Flat Earth map)



Should we be afraid of this whole new level of dementia or relieved that the conspiracy nuts are hitting rock bottom and exposing their complete inanity?

Nonsense . Some of the discussion is exceedingly erudite and intellectually challenging -- well past simple graduate level . It is just unfortunate that those who have provided intricate and challenging " proofs" seem to turn brain blind and deaf when their crafted explanations are dis-assembled .

It's the dumbest of the gnostic cults. The simplest geometry proves that the zetetic cosmology is impossible. Belief in the flat earth model requires not only ignorance of basic science, as is required for Apollo hoaxers and YECs, but an ignorance that sinks to the level of not being able to understand simple lines and angles. To be a flat-earther, you have to be incapable of passing a 3rd grade geometry quiz.

Or, as we've just seen, a shameless seeker of negative attention.
 
Just thinking of all the evidence that the Earth is roughly ball shaped and rotating. There are many such pieces of evidence.To cover up these facts would require so many people be in the know it is funny. One such example are the time zones.

Do the flat earthers also believe the Earth rotates?

The vast majority of neo flat-earthers subscribe to something called the zetetic model. They think that the earth and moon revolve on planes parallel to the earth's surface and "a few thousand miles up" (it's rare that you ever get one to offer any specific values for the dimensions of their world). They think that the sun circles around nearer to the center of the earth (the North Pole) when it's summer north of the equator, and gradually widens its circle over the next six months before starting its return toward the north. They explain day and night by claiming that the sun's light somehow only goes so far before fading to nothing. They tend to get rather angry when you ask them how everyone on earth who can see the moon at any given moment will see (virtually) exactly the same face and phase, when the geometry of the zetetic model requires that when they see, for example, a first quarter moon, other people thousands of miles away should simultaneously see a waxing crescent or a waxing gibbous moon.

Yes, they're that dumb.

ETA: And no, they don't think the earth rotates, or moves in any way at all, because they can't feel it moving. As Dr. Adequate used to observe: The stupid! It burns!

Anyone who fires an artillery shell in the North - South direction for a few miles or more needs to take into consideration the fact that the Earth rotates. Or the reason that the shortest distance in the East - West direction is not along the latitude is evidence that the Earth is round.

Should start a thread - all the evidence that
1. The Earth is round
2. The Earth rotates along its axis.

I've been following this FE affliction for some time among my more deluded acquaintances, and it seems their major source of info comes from Eric Dubay's website.

I've given up on debating, and have resorted to "You're stupid" as a standard comeback. At least it thins out the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.

When asked to present evidence of a spherical earth, I of course cite NASA's myriad images, including videos of a rotating earth. Then I'm told that NASA fakes everything, and that NASA actually means "deceiver" in Hebrew.

At that stage I lose it. How can you present evidence when even REAL SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE is disregarded? Talk about cognitive dissonance, sheesh.

I wish I had oodles of cash, I would arrange a one way trip to the sun for some of these people - they would have a brief revelation on the reality of the Universe before becoming stardust again.

After much interaction, I think it comes down to two things: inability to grasp the sheer size of the earth, and (for YECs and similar) the inability to fathom the concept of a million years.

I love light years: such a neat measurement :) Time and distance, all in one.

I bring in celestial navigation, great circle routes, microwave relay towers, and the actual travel times and paths of flights compared to the stupid flat earth map they use.

These are people who think there is an ice wall instead of Antarctica as a continent, and use that the fact that the UN symbol seems to show a flat Earth as evidence. It's like attaching hordes of cockroaches by using swords.

I have been to Scott Base, and the US base at McMurdo; they are not fake, they exist.

There is no ice wall either, and I have personally experienced 24 hours of daylight as the Sun skims around the horizon (which cannot happen on any design of flat earth)

At the same moment as you can watch the sun setting in equatorial Africa, it's directly overhead in equatorial South America.

Since the sun is then directly above a point about 6,000 miles away, yet can clearly be seen to be exactly on the horizon (rather than floating 20 or 30 degrees above it) there's no flat earth scenario where that simple geometry works.
