Manhattan explosion

Doesn't seem like anyone is dead at this point. Which I hope remains the case. But the mayor is saying it was intentional. Pipe bomb that didn't go off properly?

Actually, the pipe bomb that didn't go off properly happened earlier down the shore in NJ. So far they haven't specified what the nature of the explosive was in NY. The fact that the mayor said they felt it was intentional but also pretty quickly ruled out a connection to the NJ incident and said they didn't see it connected to terrorism so quickly leads me to believe they have some idea as to what happened in NY.
29 injured only one seriously.

Some kind of device or bomb exploded, apparently in a garbage dumpster, on W.23rd Street near 7th Avenue in Manhattan's Chelsea district this evening. I think there were about 25 injuries, reportedly none serious. A man I saw interviewed on local TV, who lives nearby, said there was an earsplitting explosion and when he looked out at the street he saw white smoke. No fire.

The pipe bomb in NJ yesterday morning, seemed to have been placed to directly effect a charity marathon for the Marine Corps. Three pipe bombs wired together but only one went off and because the race was delayed there was no one injured at that location. This one in NYC, is in a residential/commercial area, fairly low traffic with not typical terrorist type targets.

I saw it reported as a "dumpster, too, when I first saw the banners on CNN this evening.

A little bit later they showed a photo.

Now, maybe it's just my construction background, but I tend to think of a dumpster as a large container, measured in multiples of cubic yards (or meters for the rest of the world), made out of heavy gauge steel and designed to be handled exclusively by large, purpose built trucks.

A bomb large enough to blow up such a dumpster and wound surrounding bystanders would be a pretty good sized one. Those things are designed to take a lot of abuse from heavy equipment and still last for decades.

This "dumpster", judging from the photo on CNN, was more along the lines of a plastic garbage bin that someone might haul out for sidewalk pick-up.

I think they might have exaggerated a bit.

Twenty nine people hurt, but apparently mostly scratches from broken glass. (Garbage can full of empty bottles?) When I first heard it reported I was thinking 'steel shrapnel'.

Still an absolutely demented and inexcusable act, but not what 'exploding dumpster' brings to mind.

They will probably find a Facebook page of them holding sixteen zillion guns and a short video saying everything sucks
Why not use any of those guns then?
If it's copying anything it sounds more like the Boston Marathon bombs.

And a video of how to make a bomb.

Who ever it is was to wimpy to use their guns and picked the anonymous one

Being described as intentional but not a terrorist act - wonder what that means:confused:

Prank gone horribly wrong ?

Stop the presses!!! Go to 24 hour coverage!!! OMG!!! OMG!!! OMG!!!

Two homemade bombs, one found found before it went off, 28 minor injuries and maybe one more serious.

And some pipe bombs were found earlier today, only one that went off and in that case injured no one.

How many people died of gunshot wounds today? According to Google on average
More than 30 people are shot and murdered each day.

Sigh...

You seem puzzled that people react more strongly to a single event that kills 30 than to 30 events that kill 1 each.

How can I help you?

Another suspect device found. Pressure Cooker wired to a mobile phone.

The problem is even with low amounts if they start putting nails in like the IRA

Wankers

What an idiotic post.

A bomb in crowded Manhattan is very big news. Why are you even in this thread if you think this is not a major issue?
It's a pressure cooker hooked up to a phone. Get some perspective

C'mon SG put on your critical thinking cap, not this one and think about why you are wrong to compared the two. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCJEMzSWV2g

Here's a hint. The difference is people dying from gunshot are not randomly targeted. I'm certain you'd react just as these people did.

This seems like a fairly well-planned attack to me. A primary device, with a secondary device designed (presumably) to take out first-reponders and bystanders.....That's typical attack scenario. (I just attended a training seminar).
The pics of the unexploded device would seem to indicate a fairly well-assembled bomb. That it didn't go off might be a simple wiring error. Hopefully they can get fingerprint or DNA evidence from same. (Tape is a good source for both.

Unbelievable comment. Does the Boston Marathon ring a bell? Fortunately the police found the second device before it was detonated.

The second device (unexploded pressure cooker) seems to be about 4 blocks away from the explosion. Am I wrong to expect that a second bomb to kill bystanders and first responders would be placed closer to the first bomb?

I don't think that it has been determined yet if the bomb was actually inside a dumpster or trash container, or if it was placed very near those things.

The photo shows a mangled container, but I am speculating that it didn't contain the bomb. It seems too intact for that. I'm guessing that it was very near the bomb.

The one pictured does look like the small dumpsters used in Manhattan where commercial establishments have private garbage collection. The initials BIC on the dumpster stand for Business Integrity Commission which is a city agency that works to improve the performance and reliability of private waste collection in the city. (It was controlled by organized crime for decades.) That looks like one of the green dumpsters they make available to small business so they don't stack garbage along the curb. I think they are steel though. The trucks use hooks, cable and a winch to pull them up and dump them into the truck's hopper.

The thing about an IED made using a pressure cooker is that the strength of the vessel itself to withstand high pressure yields a relatively large explosion using common deflagrating 'low explosives' such as smokeless and/or black powder. And there's generally enough space inside the vessel to also carry a significant amount of material intended as shrapnel.

The Boston Marathon bombs were pressure cooker bombs using black powder and ball bearings.

Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan are generally given credit for the idea.
