Just some thoughts

I know my opinion isn't worth much but these are my own thoughts on how to move forward and not let America get sucked into a giant whirlpool of suckitude forever. I've already opined on the smug elitism thing so these are my other thoughts.

1) Forget ground game.

Endlessly it was said that the Democrats strength was its huge apparatus. But clearly that isn't as important in an age when people can self organize through social media. Which, it seems, is largely how Trump supporters did what they did.

2) Stop trying to be the sane adults.

It endlessly frustrated me that every single panel show on the news networks would consist of the following: moderate person, moderate person, ex Republican and a Trump surrogate that would just scream "lock her up" for an hour. I kept thinking "we need someone like that on our side on all these shows." Someone that isn't even trying to be reasonable they are just the ******* advocate for our side.

When someone is throwing bricks through your window you don't just meekly ask them to "stop" you counter with a molotov cocktail.

3) Don't abandon being progressive.

Double down. Be more progressive. If they are going to double down and say "we want all the things for white men and none of it for anyone else" make sure they own it and let everyone know you are the opposition to it. White men are a rapidly shrinking demographic. How long can they win elections when they are the core support?

4) Recognize that not all progressives are the real deal.

It endlessly frustrated me that so many so called "Bernie Supporters" turned out to care not at all about anything that didn't help themselves. They latched onto the message of progressivism because there were things that would help them but as soon as it appeared they would not be the centerpiece of all that advocacy they turned into petulant children.

I mean, I get it, you want to get rid of student debt and get legal weed because those are extremely important to YOU but there were loads of other people with different problems that need different solutions and some of the lame things you attached yourself to (trade tariffs, zero foreign policy intervention, blow up the banks, etc) would actually hurt a great many people.

5) Be a fighter.

No one is interested in compromise anymore. We all want someone that will promise to destroy the other side not work with them. So get some firebrand in the policy. Promise to hurt the other side not for any practical reason but because we can be mean too. Break their toys just so we can watch them cry over it. This leads me to my last bit...

6) Trolling works.

It does. Every troll was on Trump's side. Wander into any comment stream for the last year and it was all these rational people trying to talk logically about Hillary and trolls screaming about putting her in front of a firing squad because of emailghazi or whatever their fever addled minds were on about at the time. Combine the toll this takes with the endless memes that talked about "they both suck so vote Harambe" or some variation thereof and it quite frankly disillusioned many people. And most of those people were the empathetic ones who normally would have supported Hillary's policies.

I'm not saying throw insults at everyone but have some damned spine.

My main advice is to find the local office of your preferred party and ask how you can get involved.

Even if your carrying petitions for local school boards, at least you'll be part of the system of choosing how we govern ourselves.*

This is the most spot-on to me, not because a ground game doesn't matter, but because that huge apparatus apparently did not do a few simple things.

I can't say for sure since I don't know exactly what they did do, but right before the election temps were being sought to talk to Republicans about how important it was to vote. I sort of assumed Hillary already had this covered on the Dem side, but apparently she didn't.

Having Obama address a crowd of supporters - what good does that do? Getting Obama to knock on doors - that might have worked!

It's more than OK to call out politicians on voter suppression tactics, but a more effective tool might be having a national drive to help people get IDs, or rustle up volunteers to drive people to the polls. And, ideally, that would be done in a nonpartisan or bipartisan way.

I agree with some of your other points but voter turnout was the main issue.

This kind of brings up an interesting point. I think the polls contributed significantly to Clinton's defeat. I can't speak for anyone else, but if I had thought Trump stood a significant chance of winning before the election I would certainly have put job, education, and life on hold to simply rouse/organize voting in the Midwest for a week or so. I doubt that I'm alone.

This is it!

I joined the local branch of the Australian Labor Party many years ago after a terribly disappointing election loss. I was (relatively) young and active and even had a shot at becoming a candidate in a State election. I didn't follow through as my career was taking off. But the point is that an ordinary person who gets involved and active can be part of change. Otherwise you are just yelling into the void. As we all are here.

I have a counter-suggestion:

Realize that your entire world view is wrong-headed and abandon progressivism. You are literally destroying civilization, and I hope you realize that sooner rather than later.

....on the third rail. That would be wonderfully electrifying!!!!!!

Yeah, but where does Trump stand on high speed rail?

He has said he supports it. Wants to compete with China on it.

It was one of the few issues where both candidates had the right view. The only anti high speed rail candidates were Cruz, Rubio and other standard Republicans.

Here's a crazy idea:

let's convince the Electoral College to elect Hillary!!

Dems would have to make some HUGE concessions.

If I might add:

Stop talking about all those blue collar white voters as a 'declining demographic' and acting as if they cannot vanish soon enough. The Democratic party seemed so enthused about 'demographic change' working in their favour that they really did radiate the sense that they could care less about those people.

Hey buddy, if you can think of any way to do that beyond signing that petition, I'm personally all ears. Depending, naturally, and just what concessions we're talking. And maybe the ethics of aforementioned convincing methods.

Yes, that's perfect, go with it.

Or, just give up on liberalism, its failed every time its tried.

Travis - you are part of the problem and the reason why Trump won in the first place. Go on, double down, you are only going to get the reverse of what you want.

Oh and it's giving us more laughs than ever.

What I, and millions of others overseas are laughing at is the stupidity of the US electorate.
They are the same electorate that gave Obama two terms.

http://www.cnbc.com/heres-a-map-of-the-us-counties-that-flipped-to-trump-from-democrats/

Of the nearly 700 counties that twice sent Obama to the White House, a stunning one-third flipped to support Trump.

Trump also won 194 of the 207 counties that voted for Obama either in 2008 or 2012.

On average, the counties that voted for Obama twice and then flipped to support Trump were 81 percent white.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/politics/2016-election/obama-trump-counties/

Have they put something in the water that makes people stupid over the past 4 years? Of course not. Have those white people who voted for Obama suddenly become racists?

There is no scepticism, critical thought or analysis in these political forums on this site. None. It's mostly an echo chamber.

People are soaking up what the media tell them and then regurgitating it as gospel. They are not actually being sceptical at all and looking at the data for themselves because they are suffering confirmation bias.

I burst out laughing at item six.

Everyone who does not think like me is a troll!

Talk about illusory superiority!

Personally I don't care about them. I grew up with them and learned to loathe them. If not for a strange life situation I would have moved to the city ages ago where I would be blogging 10,000 word posts about how the rural areas just need to die already.

Give me a loaf of bread and starving urbanite alongside a starving rural white person and that rural person is getting none. They were the bane of my existence growing up. Terrorizing everyone. Bullying everyone. Constantly talking about how it was all justified by Jesus. They earned my hatred over many decades.

That said I clearly shouldn't have been shouting this from the rooftops if I wanted to win this past election. They may be scum but they are clearly necessary to win.

There is a difference between having a separate opinion and shouting about wanting to lock someone up for imaginary crimes or even having the same person executed for those same imaginary crimes.

What does that have to do with what I wrote? Nothing

There is a difference between posting news articles about Hillary's email scandals and responding "i can't wait to drink your tears" and "call her Madame president Hillary Clinton" both of which I heard repeatedly leading up to the election.

Trolling did not work.

A lot of folks outside the USA have been laughing at it for awhile now. Rightly so, I can't blame them. Things tend to change though.

I don't think so. The opposition will just like the BS on their side more, somehow spot that your BS is BS, and you're going to alienate your own base.

Would it be possible for you to not spam your particular ideology in every thread, even those where it is off-topic?

Did you just say that the very foundation of modern western civilisation is a failure?

The foundation? Hilarious

I agree its causing us to go deep into debt.
Its got us on the brink morally.
The nation is deeply divided.

Forget ground game.
Maybe she would have lost by a significantly larger margin without ground game. And/or, maybe this election is an outlier.

This doesn't impress me as a useful suggestion.

Your entire list seems over-reactive, and in some cases tent reducing. You sound like a prisoner of the moment.

There's one far more obvious, far simpler fix: field a decent candidate. The problem this cycle is democrats were asked to choose the tallest midget.

I was going to note that the ground game contributed to replacing a Pubbie in our state government with a Democrat. I didn't think it would happen because the Pubbie pretends to be Progressive then votes Republican on every bill.

That does seem like trolling. I guess people got sick and tired of pointing out that the email scandal was BS and watching it fall on deaf ears.

This. When I was watching CNN coverage early on Tuesday night. They could barely hold in their glee at theorizing just how blue those states like Florida or North Carolina were going to become.

Wrong. Most people voted for Hillary.

Read Clinton blaming Comey/the email scandal for her loss?

I'm guessing no.
