They couldn't make a deal with the Trump Organization.
On Thursday, a spokeswoman for the Trump Organization said the government should seek space in another location.

“After much consideration, it was mutually determined that it would be more cost effective and logistically practical for the Secret Service to lease space elsewhere,” spokeswoman Amanda Miller wrote in an email to The Washington Post.

Now they're in a trailer on the street, 50 floors below the space they're protecting.

Not quite true. The command post is in a trailer on the street. I presume that, even today's modern Secret Service protection detail, in between its bouts of boozing and whoring, can still manage to mount a competent operation from a mobile command post in the heart of an American metropolis.

I also presume that agents who are actually on duty still accompany the president throughout the building, much the same as before.

So the Secret Service isn't getting a discount on a fancy suite in a fancy hotel. Cry me a river.

A little less money that the POTUS is profiting from public funds. This is a good thing.

Well, it ain't a hotel.

This is to be expected. Donald "I'll Spend My Own Money To MAGA" J. Trump should not be expected to give the taxpayers a break on rent - not when it effects his own bottom line. Profit is what made America great. Profit is what will make America great, again.

Now that he's upped his brand value and sixty lobbying firms, eleven Russian real estate empires, two dozen hedge fund brokerage houses and forty arms dealers are willing to take an offer they couldn't refuse at kited rates, why should his organization (which he has nothing to do with, of course, cough cough) be forced to settle for less than top dollar?

British guy here, It gives me endless amusement when ever I see the word trump or it's derivatives as it's slang for fart.

I am quite sure that is what was meant! It is well know that trumpf is full of hot , malignant and odourous gas!!!!!!

Now he gets to claim, "See? It really is an uncontrolled blind trust!"

Now you hate the idea again.

He's never there.
Probably too busy boating on that river of tears the Secret Service is crying for me, about their lack discount office space in Trump Tower.

Maybe he waves to them in their van down by the river, as he sails past.

This signature is intended to irradiate people.

Why do you assume they wanted "discount" office space?

Maybe they just didn't want insanely overpriced office space.

Don't you think that government employees should be good stewards of the budgets they are entrusted with?

Remember when conservatives claimed to be concerned about federal overspending? My, how things change.

Honestly, it's not clear what point you think you've made.

I don't have much of an opinion regarding this event. You'd think that the Trump organization would give a good deal to the Secret Service for their protection of Trump, maybe even a free room or two, but they didn't. Okay, so much the worse (presumably) for the protection of Trump that the deal offered didn't satisfy the Secret Service.

Now, maybe they can protect him just as well with a command center on the street (without causing unnecessary harm to traffic). Okay, that's fine too.

But you seem to be gloating at this new development. Why, exactly?

Obviously it is important for the welfare and future of the nation for Trump's businesses (that he has no contact with, of course) to be able to price gouge the taxpayers.

Conservatives know this, somehow. Instinct, I guess.

Or maybe it's just what they'd do themselves if they were in a position to.

That would make it okay.

As long as it was another conservative doing it.

Sometimes it's not about making a point. Sometimes it's just about reporting an event, or expressing an opinion. Problem?

Gloating? I guess you could call it that. I just don't have much charity for the Secret Service lately. I do expect them to be able to run a protection detail from a trailer command post. I do expect them to proactively seek out frugal options, and not enter into negotiations to rent high-end office space at a discount. I don't expect the president to give them a special rate, just because he can, or because of some rhetorical gotcha waiting to spring. Honestly I don't expect this president to do much of anything sensical anyway.

If the Secret Service is butthurt about getting booted from Trump Tower, they can cry me a river. If libtards are excited about whatever harm or risk Trump has caused to the nation or whatever, they can cry me a river of crocodile tears. If you think I'm gloating... cry me a river.

Most of what you write is fair enough, up until you presume that the Secret Service is whining. I haven't seen evidence of that.

Sure, but I'd also like conclusive proof of Bigfoot.

Wouldn't we all!

Anyway, I thought about giving such a response, because it's actually an interesting question to me. But since mostly all such responses get in return around here are snark and abuse, I thought I'd ask if you actually wanted one, before I bothered writing it up. If you're just looking to get your snark on, I'll leave you to it.

You're giving mixed messages. If you're actually interested in a more amicable conversation, let me know.

The good news for Trump is that this leaves an opening for half a dozen gold-plated ED-209's.

There's a *possible* explanation that would work in Trump's favor here. It's highly unlikely, but I suppose possible.

The US government tends to be *very* pissy about individuals not accepting bribes and the like. People who have worked in some industries will have memories of military folks, Homeland Security, and the like refusing to accept free salads, five-minute carpools, and the like. I suppose it's possible, strictly speaking , that SS would refuse to pay anything other than market rate for whatever space they were taking up and that ugly tower.

However, I expect that Trump could waive these requirements if he so chose, and...it's Donald Trump. He's exactly the person I would expect to vindictively kick out SS, and put his family at risk, in a hissy fit because he couldn't gouge the Secret Service.

Why does it even matter? What disfavorable problem is Trump supposed to be solving, here?

Questions;

How much was Trump Tower wanting to charge for the space the SS was trying to rent from them?

Was it the same, less, or more than comparable space in the NYC market?

Was it the same, less, or more than comparable space in Trump Tower?
How much was the SS willing to pay for that space?

I don't understand. Are you attempting some sort of Socratic instruction, here? Or do you legitimately not know these things?

I don't know them. I haven't seen any numbers published. The only thing I have seen it that the DoD is continuing to pay $130,000/month for the space they rent from him there. A number that is less than useless without knowing how much space that pays for. Is it an entire floor? A broom closet? A chair in the rear lobby?

Without knowledge of at least some of that information I cannot reach any conclusion about how parsimonious the Secret Service was being, or how generous Trump Tower's terms were.

I was assuming that you must know, since you are so confident in your characterizations of the Secret Service's failure to come to an agreement with them on price.

So go ahead. Share with the rest of us.

All good questions.

Now, in reality, Toupee Fiasco should be willing and able to move his wife and children into the White House. And in theory, the WH should be incredibly secure.

(Of course, in reality, Secret Service has gone to hell ever since they got rolled in with Homeland Security, but that's another issue)

And this is something that their family should have discussed before he started running for President. But, as with many things our idiot president does, this obvious preliminary step did not happen. This suggests both that, well, he's a fool, and that his wife or son being kidnapped would not be much of an issue for him.

Fool for sure, but I'm not sure I agree with the last part. I imagine a real cynic might consider the possibility that a kidnapping would be political gold for all sorts of repressive and retributive programs. But I really do doubt this, because even if he considers wives just as expendable meat puppets he seems to have a more paternal attitude toward his kids. A less cynical likelihood is that Trump simply assumed, as usual, that unusual and unusually expensive measures would be taken simply because they must be, and because he is the specialest special snowflake in the universe, who deserves the earth now for promising the moon someday.

I'm fine with SecServ going back to DC and letting anyone get in with Trumpf!!!!!

Exactly they need to be there perfect for a rent hike.

Maybe they had some black secret service people there and as per trump protocol they knew they needed to kick them out?

I read somewhere that Trump Tower literature now touts the space as the safest in NYC. Turn those lemons into lemonade . . .
