Doctor fighting anti-vaxxers wins prize

Japanese physician wins prize for publicly battling anti-vaxxers:

(I hope this is not behind a paywall).

Dr. Riko Muranaka has been fighting to reverse an anti-HPV vaccine campaign in Japan that reduced rates of vaccination from 70% to less than 1% based on junk science. This battle has been costly personally to her.

Wonderful that she has now been recognized by receiving the 2017 John Maddox Prize for promoting science and evidence on a matter of public interest despite facing hostility etc.

Good for her! Where I live is a county with a high percentage of rabid anti-vaxxers. I don't know what it will take to convince them. They are a loud, vocal group.

I consider vaccinations to be one of the highest scientific achievements of the 20th century. I can't believe this BS.

19th century, I think. Or, in fact, a bit earlier. Edward Jenner himself had been inoculated for smallpox before developing vaccination with cowpox in 1798. A fact I just learned looking up stuff for this post.

"Vaccination", of course, comes from the Latin for "cow".

I was one of the earlier vaccinations for polio, in 1954.

ETA: Added link to Jenner. And the antivaxers are disgusting.
