Today's school shooting 3-20-18

I like how people say mentally ill as if it's a free pass for the person committing the act.

Being mentally ill comes with enough garbage assumptions , maybe let's not add in denying them to that.

It's the gun rights folks who focus on the mental illness as a way of denying that this country has a problem with guns.

Like violent videogames, other countries have mentally ill individuals, too, and yet do not have the problem we do.

Oh it's not a free pass for the person who committed the act. It's a free pass for the group the person belongs to.

The Beeb is reporting that 3 have been injured and taken to hospital, including the shooter.

Shooter is reported dead, killed by school resource officer.

Score one for the "good guy with a gun".

But is it the guns, or the way mental illness is dealt with? Or both?

Yeah, the pro-gun folks are crowing about it on twitter & FB. Including at least one guy who's insisting that the story has "disappeared from the liberal media" because a good guy with a gun saved the day.

To be fair, it really was reported by right-leaning news sources first. I think it was the Washington Examiner originally.

1 dead, 2 wounded = Win!

My "pro gun control" version might involve "thank goodness he didn't have an AR-15" and "how did he get the gun?"

ETA: And having a good guy with a gun in the neighborhood is a good thing. Note that this particular good guy was in fact a police officer.

Maryland high school locked down after several people shot, but 'event is contained'

White kid? Mentally ill
Black kid? Angry at the whites - possibly has a manifesto
Immigrant? Upset with Trump voters - posiblemente tiene los manifestos
Brown? TERRORIST!

That about sums it up, yeah?

I don't know much about the area at all personally, it's well south of the DC/Bmore area, and out on a peninsula to boot. The "good" news is that "only" two people besides the shooter were harmed, and both still alive at the time of posting this. I think the area leans republican fairly hard based on what I know of our gerrymandering, but it's tough to get a sense of the town when it's unincorporated (ie. there's no town government at all).

I've been following it on Channel 5 DC's site, since it's relatively close compared to my usual local news sites, but...still a fairly long way off.

It's the big news story in every local site - on a day when the big story should be the heavy snowfall we're forecast to get overnight.

We don't know details yet, though I read that a student shot other students. Maybe the two that were shot were specific targets and there wasn't a plan to shoot more. If so, then the cop didn't prevent more shootings.

Good point.

Although if one or the other wounded was a specific target, the shooter might have fired again and killed her, so the cop may have prevented a death.

The investigations and news reports might tell us more, or it might remain a mystery.

Either way, it's not exactly a "feel good" story, no matter how you feel about good guys with guns.

I wonder what the procedure is for a cop at the school when there is a shooter. Is the cop supposed to verbally engage and try to disarm the shooter? Or is he supposed to kill on sight? Quietly stalk the shooter and kill him whenever you can get a good shot?

Once the shooter opens fires, I think "verbal engagement" has pretty much gone down out the window.
As for your final two, that is a tactical decisions the cops have to make. But it amounts to the best way to take out the shooter.

Right now police aren't saying if he was killed or killed himself. The cop did shoot but they aren't confirming the shooter's cause of death.

CNN: The armed student who shot two other students at Great Mills High School in Maryland Tuesday was a 17-year-old named Austin Wyatt Rollins, St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said.

Rollins had a prior relationship with the female student who was shot, the sheriff said. She suffered life-threatening critical injuries, Cameron said.

Glad to see an armed guard prevented more deaths, makes the Broward police look even more inept in comparison. Expect more armed personnel in schools.

The girl is brain-dead and will be unplugged. The shooter and her recently broke up their romance. My guess is that he didn't want that to happen. The boy who got shot in the leg is doing well. Unknown if he was related to the love-gone-bad or was an unintended victim.

We still don't know if the shooter was killed or suicide.

The shooter killed himself with a bullet to the head. The officer didn't stop an active shooter because the kid only wanted to shoot his ex-girlfriend. The shot to her head also went into another kid's leg.

The shooter used his father's Glock which was legally owned by him. The shooter was under 21 which is the legal gun age in Maryland.

Shootings perpetuate shootings, esp among the ill and desperate. In 1966 Charles Whitman started shooting people for apparent reason after those pioneers, so to speak, you got Colombine, Aurora, Chris Dorner, and all the rest

Yeah, the campaign for more armed personnel practically writes itself:

Three children or fewer shot and killed. That’s our guarantee!

Note also all those crowing about how he was stopped by an armed guard (even though he wasn't) are also claiming how the state has an automatic weapon ban, and that didn't stop the shooting. Although had he used an automatic weapon, he could have done a lot more damage.

To summarize:
The reason he didn't do more damage was because of the armed guard (it wasn't) and not due to the automatic weapon ban (although there is no indication that made a difference, either)
