TVNZ reporting that the second phase of the rescue operation is under way, and that divers are starting to bring the next group of kids out.

Their report says the coach is still inside.

The BBC says they are keeping the rescued individuals' identities secret for now, so as not to cause anxiety to the remaining families.

Some say the strongest were out first, others, the weakest. One says it was a mixture of neither youngest or eldest, but the inbetweens.

The first boy taken from the cave was Mongkol Boonpiem, 13, who emerged at 5.37pm local time.

He was in critical condition and needed urgent evacuation, a family friend told local media. His condition has reportedly since stabilised.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/ar...Thai-boys.html

The DAILY MAIL claims to know this by talking to a local insider.

Quote:
The second boy was Prajak Sutham, known as Note. Number three was Nattawoot Thakamsai, a 14-year-old asthma sufferer whose parents have already lost a baby daughter to cancer.

Lastly came Pipat Bodhu, 15, aka Nick, who was not even in the team but came along as a friend of the goalkeeper.
It'll be interesting to see if DM have got it right, for once.

None of it has been confirmed by official Thai sources:

Quote:
There was a flurry of activity there as an ambulance arrived. It was thought to be carrying a fifth person brought out of the cave as the second phase of the operation began on Monday.

Thai officials are still not confirming reports that a fifth person has been rescued.

CNN reports that a total of 7 have been rescued so far, and that the coach is still in the cave.

The same paper that I linked to above that said that the coach came out fourth, now says (with no retraction on the first article) that the coach is still back on the shelf.

Having said that, they reported that at about 4:30 all four of today's group were past the infamous "T" and at the base in Chamber 3.

My wife says Thai language TV is just as confused. One station reports the coach was taken out yesterday, another says he's still in there.

One of the news stations is reporting that all four of today's lot are out and en route to (if not already at) the hospital. Purportedly one of the rescue team tweeted that the day's work is over.

CNN has reported the same number and has been leading the news-breaking all day, today (yesterday the Beeb was first with most stories).

The Thai language coverage here is all over the map, reporting every time an informant farts, evidently. The leading English paper lags far behind (the Bangkok Post) all of them today.

It should be emphasized that the news from everyone is informal. The government will likely have a press conference within an hour or so.

It's now officially confirmed:

Quote:
13:59
BREAKINGEight boys now out of cave
We have more details from a source within the rescue operation:

The other four people rescued today were all boys from the Wild Boars football team
This means that their 25-year-old coach remains inside the cave system
The four boys who came out today are cold, but otherwise in a good condition
Rescuers plan to bring out the remaining four boys and the coach on Tuesday

The character of Alan Schaefer was Dutch. He would have been speaking Netherlandese, not German. The low-country folk tend to speak in short, guttural syllables, in order to get the information out there before the water closes over their heads again.

The Austrians are similar, except that their speech must finish before they shove in another forkful of Sacher Tart.

Originally, they said they were going to bring then out in groups of 4-3-3-3, but actually they have gone 4-4, The question now is, will they take extra staging tanks in and try to get the last five out in one day?

The movie that will inevitably be made from this is going to be 3.5 hours long, harrowing, either uplifting or heartbreaking, and generate Oscar nominations for whoever plays the coach, and the boy who portrays football player #6.

In the movie, the boys will be white, the coach will be black, the cave will be in South America, and the hero will be an American who recuses the group single-handed because the local authorities are totally hopeless.

The 33 didn't make any money. I doubt Big Hollywood is coming after this story, particularly as there's a media industry here that I'll bet gets all the parents signed pretty quickly.

Yeah, it's got kids but if everyone gets out, there's kinda a no-tension-plot problem. The former Seal who died is probably the way to go, but I just don't see anyone spending big bucks. The 33 had star power and didn't turn a profit. Maybe if the Hong Kong/Shanghai folks get behind it, but someone better start playing up the Chinese heritage of the deceased guy. No one's old enough to have Jackie Chan play 'im, so they'd go with Jet Li, who with make-up might pass for Thai-Chinese.

More likely we'll see a rushed out flimsy Thai production, then an Aussie version highlighting the Aussie diver's contributions, and Lifetime TV will take twelve dollars from their next Bobby Beat Me But Now I'm Getting Better movie and make a made for tv version.

It's a rescue, in a hot sweaty jungle, with swimming, and no one has a character in a bikini?

Scuttlebutt here, but with no official word, is that they're going to try for all five of them today.

We're getting a hodgepodge of mixed signals from the various supposedly official communications channels. Someone on the Seal team purportedly told a friend who told a friend that they want to get all five today and would start early. The former governor, now official mouthpiece and nanny, said last night after 9 that preparation for the next phase would be 20 hours. That'd put 'em heading out at five or six p.m. which is ridiculous.

And evidently super-rich famous foreigners are fine with us! Elon Musk was taken in up to chamber 3 yesterday. He donated his mini-sub to them for "future possible use".

It should be noted...

> The Thai press continues to emphasize "The Thai Navy Seal rescue" but without naming names is giving full credit to the help from foreigners. Gov't interviews are even more forthcoming; the press is afraid of its own shadow and makes sure to load Thai credit first. (Jail terms and shut-down papers and radio stations will do that for you, I guess.)
> The English-speaker wasn't native Thai. He grew up in Myanmar and had moved around to a number of schools. Reports now say that it was just the one kid talking to the divers who found them.
> The big story here about them widening the tight channel so divers could get through with tanks (prior to finding the boys) seems to have been made up to cover some dawdling. They are pushing the tanks through that final (coming out; going in it would be "initial") passage. Gossip radio up in Chiang Rai says that's why the Brit divers pushed ahead. They knew from experience that they had to continue exploring while the Seals were busily awaiting instructions.
> Our P.M. went up yesterday to lift spirits but not, they assure us, because he is running for re-election in "the election to be named later". Seems to have backfired. No one covered any of his visit.

Based on eight examples so far, it sounds like those full-face scuba masks are working out pretty well. Are these widely used in recreational diving, or are they primarily for unusual circumstances?

I SCUBA dive and I have yet to see one used. If you need to talk underwater, it would be essential.

I do wonder how they taught the kids to 'clear' a full face mask. Masks often leak and you lift it and blow out your nose to get the water out. Sometimes I do it on purpose to defog things. This would be pretty simple to teach a kid (for a half mask).
The full face one I imagine is harder to clear and would start to fill up in the exact location where you breathe. Then you'd need to learn to clear that part too. That's scary.

They have started the effort to bring out the last 4 boys and the coach. Let's hope that the plan keeps going as well as it has so far.

Elon Musk has arrived on scene and delivered his custom-made cave-rescue submarine, which probably won't be used.

Thanks, Elon!

Exactly. If he brought it there, it's because they wanted him to. The Thai military was strict about securing the area. I'm sure it could be useful for moving supplies or in case of injury(if they do any clean up).

Some could say he needs some good PR about now, but I think he would have done it anyway.

The dogs bark but the caravan moves on.

What an amazing effort to make it happen in auch a short time.

Plus, apparently, a doctor and three Navy divers who were staying with them. Although as these four are all experienced divers their passage back should be relatively straightforward.

ETA: Reuters now saying ten out in total.

Because Musk-haters HAVE to hate him and anything he does.... its a compulsion with them.

He offers help so they hate him for that.
He doesn't offer help they would hate him for that too.

They just cannot help themselves.

Meanwhile, its just been reported that the 11th boy is out

I don't really know anything about the guy, but the Thai authorities must have been positive about it or he wouldn't have got near the place.

They say the submarine won't be used as it's not needed, but that's because the system they're using is working. It's very hazardous though and suppose they'd run into problems? The sub might have saved lives in that event. In a situation like this, multiple reduncancies and back-up plans are not exactly a bad idea.

Tweets from an Australian news agency saying all the trapped children and the coach are out and they're just getting the doctor and the Navy divers that stayed with them out now.

Hooray!
