Political polarization sparks confrontation at Starbucks, triggering online fury

It began when Palo Alto resident Rebecca Parker Mankey attempted to shame an elderly white man wearing a red Make America Great Again hat as he sat in the coffeehouse — an encounter she later wrote about on social media. Calling him a "hater of brown people," Mankey said she yelled at him and addressed Starbucks customers and employees to join her in her effort. She said she left the store but soon returned and continued to yell at him. Mankey said she was "heartbroken" that other white people didn't stand up against the man wearing what has become for some a symbol of hate. She followed him out of the store to the parking lot, where she continued to berate and swear at him.

She called the man "Nazi scum" and threatened to post pictures of him on social media, which she then did, along with her version of the incident on her Facebook page and on Twitter. She asked the public for help finding him — "I want him to have nowhere to hide," she wrote -- a practice called "doxing," or posting personal contact information to encourage threats and harassment.

The incident has had repercussions not only for Mankey, who said on Tuesday she's received death threats and was fired from her job as an accountant, but also for her former employer, Gryphon Stringed Instruments. Staff at the store said they were inundated with angry phone calls and emails Monday and Tuesday.
On Twitter, she said: "I am going to publicly shame him in town and try to get him fired and kicked out of every club he is in. I am going to go to his house march up and down carrying a sign that says he hates black people. I am going to organize protests where he works to make him feel as unsafe as he made every brown person he met today."

There's more in the story, but you get the drift. Apparently the old man was simply minding his own business. It's the hat that set her off.

Is it true that "brown people" (her words; she's quite white) feel unsafe by the mere sight of a MAGA hat? Even if the wearer is an old man who is just minding his own business?

Reads story.

looks up picture of victim and bully.

Foot tall mohawk on a 46 year old woman is not a great look.

She got fired. Good.

She called an elderly Jewish man a Nazi... hoo boy what a god damn *******

Just about had it with these freaking hats. Unless a pirate or ninja has one. That's just fun.

To an older guy, the hat is probably just a feel good message. It's those of us who are watching the white supremacists adopt them that have the nasty connotations. Guy in NJ got harassed by a young guy for wearing one in a parking lot. You really can't claim some abstract moral high ground when you are threatening and humiliating a guy who is minding his business. Fighting monsters and whatnot.

These angry progressives should just all wear brown shirts to show solidarity.

Yeah, enough with the hat-hating, and I'm not a fan of MAGA by any means. Owning and wearing one will soon be a national badge of shame. Like big hair, enormous shoulder-pads and pink boob-tubes.

It's real amusing to see people characterize the assailants in these cases as "progressives". I don't see the progressive connection there, don't know where that comes from.

From the article, the woman is “an appointed member of Palo Alto's North Ventura Coordinated Area Plan Working Group and co-chairs the Bayshore Progressive Democrats”

“Bayshore PROGRESSIVE democrats”

Happy to help.

I'm all for shaming MAGAhatters to their faces for supporting Trump, but the whole thing about trying to get his name and get him fired and all that jazz just for wearing the hate was dumb; looks like she got what she was trying to give.

Unsafe? Well, if he were one of those goofballs walking around in camo with a "Richard enhancer" rifles and a red hat, yes. But I certainly wouldn't put the slightest trust in anyone wearing one of those. Might as well put on a swastika armband or a KKK hood, as far as I care.

Do I need some white woman making a scene and riling dude up? Nope.

So we've moved on to "living while wearing a MAGA hat" threads now. Just as tedious as the others.

Sounds like she needs to be pimp-slapped. Sorry, I'm watching Black Dynamite animated series. Awesome show. But man what a weirdo this woman is. Unbelievable the frenzy y'all work yourselves into.

This woman wants to destroy a man for expressing an opinion by wearing a hat. She is the real problem in this instance. Big time.

The man may just be gloating to Palo Alto liberals (or whatever you wanna call them). Maybe he hates them. Gee I wonder why?

You have no idea why he's wearing it, and just because many easily-offended people think it's racist doesn't mean it is. No it is not the same as a swastika, sorry folks. You are deluded. You see an easy target for your hatred and it feels good to let it out. No thought required, you're part of a group now!

Or maybe not. This woman thought she'd have support from her peers, yet nobody stepped up and she lost her job. Maybe y'all aren't as like-minded as you think you are?

Believing all Trump supporters are racist - well golly that's an awful lot of racists in a country of 320 million people! Who knew? How scary life must be for you all.

What if the hat said "Vote Trump 2020"? Just as bad? I mean it seems "anything Trump" is seen as racist by some people. The man is the gawdamn President and approximately half of all voters voted for him, and for a LOT of different reasons. How utterly stupid to center on racism and apply it to everyone.

I'm blown away by how this hatred has manifested. You're being played. You're also hurting your own agenda because, as you can see by this article, people don't necessarily agree with you. Hate is not the way.

Who is that "you" that you are addressing this to?

I do not own any pink boob-tubes as far as I know, but I do not see anything shameful about them. Let me close this closet a little tighter.

...or as some others tend to think we are.

It sure is, isn't it?

Well, a lot of us.

So all the latino who voted for Trump and I think from memory 8% of blacks who voted for Trump are all internally racist of themselves?

Some of them are racist against other groups, Jews mainly.

Heh, 'wearing the hate'.

Heh, 'wearing the hate'.

The thing that cracks me up about the whole MAGA hate thing is it isn't even a controversial slogan.

Obama/Clinton/anyone could have been the first to have grabbed it off of a million dollar PR/advertising company.

It seems to me it is irrational association with a harmless phrase to a person certain Americans find uber offensive.

Kind of odd when you watch it with no association.

Our current government had at the last election "Let's do this!". If it were Trump I think people would say "He means build a wall and starve Mexicans!"

I'm in that uncomfortable middle ground where I don't support Trump at all, but I also don't think that he is Literally Hitler and therefore all of his supporters are equivalent to Nazis. People like this woman are not helping. You're not going to change any minds by yelling insults at people and threatening them. Quite the reverse.

Exactly it is about the good old days when blacks knew their place and if they got uppity you had a tree nearby to solve the problem.

Please racist symbols never go out of style, look at the confederate flag.

Yes. See ex sheriff David Clarke or Michael The Black Man as clear examples.

It is like all those log cabin republicans who know that they have a constitutional right to be discriminated against and fired from their jobs.

I have no idea what's wrong with the black folks that voted for Dolt 45. Maybe they're self-hating like Jesse Lee Peterson, or maybe they wish to prove white people irredeemable, like Louis Farrakhan, or something else.

As for those Latinos that voted for him, I'm guessing the ones that did were almost always white.

Caitlyn Jenner endorsed the guy, after all, despite him surrounding himself with evangelicals like Pence. His war against LGBT people, and trans people in particular, was entirely predictable.

Seems pretty easy to see why it's offensive to me.

"Again" implies he means "imitate the past". So...Iraq War 2? Mass incarceration? The Crack Era and brazen racism under Reagan? Nixon's scandals and retreat from Civil Rights gains (nope, Nixon created the EPA, among other things)? Jim Crow? Possibly a return to Operation Wetback? Maybe he just meant the GOP - Maybe the Barry Goldwater, howling racist GOP, or the Lily-White Republicans, he certainly embraced their overall message.

In any case, it's a message that's perfect for a man who clearly is a white supremacist.

You are saying is as bad as a swastika, but that the lady shouldn't have said anything.

How many Jews in ww2 do you think felt that way? " Oh adolph is a monster, but Jim could really stand to shut up about it".

Even you don't belive the lines you give out,

Please explain how black people can be racist, I have popcorn.

( id likely agree with you but I know it will get you a nice wave of hatred. )

The problem is that lady personifies the way the left has been acting for the past 15 or so years. We have become so ******* annoying and out there, people voted in someone who was the butt of like 30 per cent of jokes 25 years ago.

We have an image issue but we refuse to see it, and we keep cultivating less and less respect because our goal became forcing people to say they agree with us, versus actually trying to work with people and bring them around to our side.

I was going to post how you are wrong, but then I realized all I would get is " you seem to know a little too much about racist symbols. ".

And that is what some kinds of peope have done to debate.

The real offense is wearing a baseball cap when not playing baseball. Also indoors, apparently, which doubles the offense. I can excuse crimes of passion but not crimes of fashion.

Speaking for myself only, of course...

I never said I "hate" him. I said I wouldn't trust him. The hat states, clear as day, that he considers overt white supremacism, and outright hostility to anyone who isn't a straight white male, to be perfectly fine in a US president.

Or maybe not. This woman thought she'd have support from her peers, yet nobody stepped up and she lost her job. Maybe y'all aren't as like-minded as you think you are?

You mean "Maybe y'all aren't as like-minded as she thought y'all were?" And...um, yeah, we aren't. Could have told you that years ago, and probably did. I've been saying since I got here that black people don't love democrats, they just hate republicans. The past...what 3 1/2 years?...have thoroughly justified this.

Maybe for you. But as for a "vote Trump 2020" hat, after seeing his presidency for the past two years, you're either fine with Dolt 45's clear desire to inflict harm on people who aren't like him, or you simply have no idea what's happening in the world, but still want to vote. Again, untrustworthy.

The thing that cracks me up about the whole MAGA hate thing is it isn't even a controversial slogan.

It kinda is, especially combined with Trump's policies, proposed and otherwise. It implies that the US was better off in the nebulous past and that they should return to that past - ill defined as it is. The thing is, for many minority groups, the further into the past you go, the worse off they were, so for them, "Make America Great Again" is a threat.

The phrase also implies America isn't great now, which seems unpatriotic.

At least she admits it was an error. But she has to love the tax break.
