Tennessee official: A 'queer' running for president is as 'ugly' as it gets

I'm unsurprised. This is not an uncommon sentiment here. Don't be fooled by our TV and movies: the US is much less enlightened than is commonly depicted. The urban/rural divide is exceptionally wide in such matters.

If "I can somehow squeeze a homophobic rant into arguing why we need fewer gun laws" ain't the most goddamn Republican thing ever I don't know what is.

I'm one of those people who think bring on the comments.

At least when people say this stuff, you know who the idiots not to vote for are.

Better than them saying it behind everyones backs and publicly coming across not being complete **********

That is sad and disheartening.

Planning a move to Canada or Europe? They're more accepting there. Avoid the prairies, however.

Of course not. I've lived all over backwards parts of the country and been fine. The thing about idiots is that they're idiots. Quite easy to overcome. Can't let the idiots control your behavior.

"avoid the prairies" is pretty much what TragicMonkey meant when he said urban/rural.

"In American get yourself to a state that either touches water or Canada, and even then your odds are only about 75%" - a phrase I heard once.

He sounds exactly like most of my older relatives in Tennessee. The few that aren't like that are the ones who moved out of the state for a while and experienced wider cultures. My generation tend to be a little better, or know to keep their mouths shut, and most of the younger generations don't even know why it's an issue.
