Is a new influx of H1b contractors into the US about to despoil the US Job market, hell, the Canadian one to for that matter. Low quality Subcontinental IT workers driving down wage levels in an all around bid to screw America (and Canada)?

....what?

Kamala Harris is the multi-racial child of comparatively recent immigrants to the US. Selecting her as the Vice Presidential candidate is apparently sending the message that the the future is unlimited immigration :boggled::tinfoil

My experience of "Low quality Subcontinental IT workers" is that they are well trained, highly motivated, diligent and hard-working. There are some cultural differences which you need to be aware of if you're working with them (specifically an unwillingness to contradict a superior (me :)) even when they're flat out wrong :o) but if you're aware of this and can read between the lines then you can usually work around this.

I'd take that over lazy, entitled, disinterested and stupid any day.

Are you going to hit and run in this thread too or actually answer questions when people point out you're just posting gibberish?

No US worker is more entitled to a job in a country than a worker from any other country m so nothing can be stolen.

If these so-called "American jobs" exist to be "stolen" right now, why aren't actual Americans applying for them? Are they not qualified, not educated enough to do them? Too lazy to travel even to their own city let alone across the world to apply for them?

Seems to me those complaining the loudest about "stolen US jobs" and "America First" are the ones least qualified and willing to take the jobs already on offer.

The idea doesn't make sense. It's just an appeal to outrage. As you said, if those jobs were available why aren't Americans filling them; and if immigrants take them, what difference does it make, since Americans weren't filling them anyway? If, instead, Americans already have these jobs, are they going to get fired for the benefit of the immigrant workers? Also, immigrants also consume, and thus create more job openings on the market. There's no way that this is a problem unless you have a huge influx of immigrants in a short period of time.

NB : I do not agree with this position, but my understanding of the idea is that companies will lay off Americans currently working and replace them with immigrants brought in, who would do the same work for far lower wages/benefits. While there is a little bit of truth to some of the underlying concepts (why did so many US companies off-shore call centers to India, after all?) it falls apart when you try to say it's going to be driven intentionally by the government.

Any given company wanting to replace its staff with people they can pay less? Sure, the company benefits and doesn't have to worry about the now-laid off worker. But the government doing it, and doing it at such a large scale, now just created a massive unemployment problem for themselves.

If you apply for a job, and some other white guy gets it, you just didn't get the job.

If you apply for a job, and some minority gets it, the job was stolen.

Yeah the basic argument, rarely spelled out step by step but the pieces are always there, has always been.

1. "Immigrants" are coming from places with lower standards of living.
2. Ergo they are used to a lower standard of living.
3. Ergo they will be happy be paid less to maintaining that lower (or only slightly higher) standard of living.
4. Ergo they will "lower bid us" out of jobs.

Ditto.
Indeed, the idea that companies would be happy replacing a dev with some hack who was "low quality" is bollocks.

Off-shoring? Yeah, but a lot of companies got burned by that, and that was invariably the management at the other end.

People coming over here? Not so much. And definitely no more than the people brought up here.

That's treason talk

Heh, about the only thing I noticed was that we always had to have at least one vegetarian version when ordering pizza.

It’s just the usual whining about being outcompeted by people who are supposedly inferior.

I'm still trying to figure out the logic* behind connecting Kamala Harris with an increase in companies increasing usage of H1b visas to hire IT people from India. Is Biden running for POTUS going to increase companies importing more Guinness from Ireland thus taking jobs away from American brewers producing such classic swill as Bud Lite?

*

The only thing I can think of is the bill she was trying to pass that would increase the limit of visa's for specific countries like India. If there is any underlying problem with increasing H1B's, I think we have some threads regarding that, although I always seem to get push back from the individuals who's jobs aren't threatened, same as in regards to immigration and construction.

OK, which Canadians are we talkin' about here?

OK, which Canadians are we talkin' about here?

Hockey players, skating down here, taking away good American jobs from American hockey players, eating poutine instead of proper American chili cheese fries, drinking Tim Horton instead of Starbucks. Shameful. SHAMEFUL!

Here's a jump rope song:

Trees on talk
Just as bad
As trees on WALK!

One of her parents was indian. That's all the logic they need.

My favorite attack now is how she has an ancestor who was a SLAVE OWNER.

Like somehow it is an issue for Harris because she is descended from a slave owner who raped one of his slaves?

Has she tried to erect a statue to honor him or something?

My favorite attack now is how she has an ancestor who was a SLAVE OWNER.

That's just the Right doing their favorite thing, completely failing to grasp the point and thinking they've got a nice shiny petard* to run the Left up on, in this case ancestor blame, because they can't achieve an erection without using a bad, completely misunderstood, strawman version of a Leftist argument against them.

"Oh so I'm supposed to feel all this white guilt (no you're not) about my ancestors owning slaves? (No). Is that what you think librusl? (Well no but...) then (well wait you've really aren't grasping the argument concerning personal obligations in relation to complex social problems with causes stretching....) HA YOU'VE ACTIVATED MY TRAP CARD! Her ancestors owned slaves! What do you make of that!? (I literally don't care) Man I totally owned you libtards! (No you didn't)."

*Yes I'm aware that's not actually how the metaphor works. I like it better this way and if anyone has a problem with it I refer them to this photo of Japanese Wrestler Toru Yano demonstrating exactly how my (censoreds) I give https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e1/ec/2e/e1ec2ec9c4cacdda52936c23e5a4fe1b.jpg
