"Builders working in the attic of Barney Broom's cottage in the village of Gunthorpe found an old jar containing what appeared to be a model of an alien, about 12 inches tall, made of clay and preserved in a liquid which smelled of vinegar. "

And some fantastic reasoned questioning from the BBC:

"As far as the Pentagon is concerned, it's nothing more than "another hoax". There is no military connection, a spokesman told the BBC News Magazine.
But what would be the point of producing this dummy? Why would someone be making aliens like this in the 1940s? "

Ooh, then it must be REAL!

And the comments left by the public are priceless:

"You believe the American military after the cover ups they do? I have personally been in contact with 12 different species, of which the above alien is a bipedal infant of a sub-species of the vernculas quadrapeds. Many have visited and I think this is the leftover from some kind of breeding programme constructed after the Roswell landings. Don't be afraid of the truth!"
- Jimmy Henderson, Lancashire

"It looks remarkeably like my ex-husband.Those big beady eyes and clod feet are unmistakable. He just popped out for a loaf of bread on June 4th 1947 and I haven't seen him since."
Tina, Hastings

If it's made of clay, why did they feel the need to pickle it?

Prop was what I was thinking, or perhaps a tourist attraction for one of those roadside "museums", or a simple conversation piece.
A cool tip is to use a little coffee or something like that in the "preserving liquid". Just so much that you can almost make out what is in the jar. Makes it much more interesting, and easier to make for us sculpturally challenged people.

If they know it's made of clay, why do they keep pretending they don't know whether or not it's a hoax?

Cause then there wouldn't be a story, of course.

Now, do you suppose it's a sign that the Martians had evolved from a more primitive clay-using hut-dweller alien?

Intrigued by the discovery, Mr Broom's initial suspicion was that the model was somehow connected to nearby United States' airbases. Not quite knowing what to do with it, he approached the Sci-Fi Channel

Mr Broom, a film-maker

Egads! He's not just in search of a commission by any chance, is he?

Edited to add: Actually, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that aliens of that design were not seen before
Whitley Streiber's account of alien abductions Communion was published. Since then all aliens have resembled his description. If I'm right (and it has to happen sometime, surely) then this alien model is highly unlikely to be from 1947 and must therefore have been deliberately wrapped in deceptive newspaper. Which I suppose is fair enough if you're making a hoax.

I was under the impression that the "Grey's" started "appearing " in the 70's, rather than the 80's when "communion" appears to have been published.

Either way, the "Grey" is not an ET type from the 40's.
However this could all be part of the hoax. "see its a relic from the 1940's, before most people knew about grays, therefore it must be real, because a hoaxer wouldn't know about grays unless they where real"... or something like that.
Trying to think like a woo makes my head hurt.

For example:

A typical alien from the 1950s, the Flatwoods Monster:

And here's one from the 1960s, from an episode of the Outer Limits. This particular alien was described by two people who thought they'd been abducted the week after the show aired - Barney and Betty Hill who JamesM mentions.

If you found one of those in a pickle jar in your attic you'd really have something to shout about ;)

I was of the impression that it was Communion that really kicked off the alien abduction thing this time around, but perhaps I'm wrong. I often am :(

I think it would be fair to say that Communion propelled alien abduction into popular culture.

I've always help Betty and Barney Hill to be the start of that craze, but I'm sure they weren't the first alledged "abductees." People have been abducted by Fairies and witches for centuries. Not sure if there is any line there.

I suppose there's no reason to suppose that he invented the look - and indeed it seems he didn't; he just made sure that everyone knew that's how aliens are supposed to look.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 1977
Communion - 1988

They're basically the same alien, just not friendly.

I just read an article not too long ago about a study (a single study, hardly conclusive, but nevertheless) that suggests the "grey" image is how faces might appear to newborn babies. I'll have to see if I can dig it up.

ETA: Found it. It was in skeptic magazine.
