Fellow Texans, more shame in Austin

Chisum apparently dozed in class for a few years.

The Texas legislature is truly an amazing collection of neanderthals -- and apprarently Georgia's, too. Sending an e-mail to some of those people seems futile. First off, it assumes they can read. And then, how can you hope to make an inroad into ignorance as dense and extensive as Chisum's and Bridges' in one message? You'd have to hope that volume might count for something. Everyone is free to go for whatever fairy tales they like religionwise, but it's difficult not to worry a bit when they're constantly trying to replace science with ignorance.

I dug for three hours to try and find some official reading of "the memo" on the Texas Leg. webpage but couldn't. I hope to find something more substantive than the DMN news article soon... hope being a eumphamism for totally regret that this crap is occuring in my state government.

I'm half tempted to head down to Austin during the biology textbook hearings and call out the Creationists who think the "shortcomings" of "Darwinism" aren't being addressed in them.

Texans, we need to coordinate an e-mail campeign on this. Post to this thread if you're interested in participating. Please do so even if Crevo isn't a passion for you like it is me, but you're interested in Science education in our state.

I don't know how much time I would have to participate, but I am interested in knowing what is going on in my new home state. ( I moved here 3 years ago.) When are the biology textbook hearings?

Why does the word "student" appear under my id?

The tag you get depends on the number of posts you have made, unless you request a custom tag. (Note that we usually "don't see" custom tag requests until a user has about 50 posts. Also, determining the right place to ask is left as an exercise for the reader.)

I'm going to be keeping my eye on the board and I'll post information here.

You might also check out the Texas Freedom Network website.

Thank you

I would try to help, but I'm not Texan anymore. As it stands, we've got plenty of trouble in Ohio along these lines at the moment...

Texas not only rejects textbooks that contradict the politico-religious views of its right-wing board of education, but it now has some of the big textbook publishers trained to turn out books conforming to these views. Holt Rinehart Winston, for instance. I guess if the board wanted a flat or cubical earth to be the center of the universe, HRW would gin up a book conveying that idea. It's all about money, of course, and Texas buys 600 or so million bucks worth of texts every couple years.
