February 5th, it was time to walk my dog, Monty. And we walked up the street where I live to the beach. And I let the dog go. And he likes to run. He was having a good time. And I was picking up seashells. I happened to look up, and there was some large pieces of driftwood that had been washed up on shore. And I ran over there to investigate. And I looked down, and I saw a bed sheet. I was very stunned when I saw, and I realized it was a child's body. I called 911. Yeah, I'm in Rockaway Park. I just found a body of a child. Well, it turned out to be a boy between 3 and 5 years old.

Honoring an Unknown Child Found on a Beach, and a Long-Lost Vietnam War Pilot

On Feb. 5, Cecilia Davis, a 47-year-old nurse, was walking her dog, Monty, and looking for shells on Rockaway Beach, in Queens, when she saw a cute bedsheet adorned with Disney characters and nestled in the sea foam and seaweed.

Then she saw a tiny, discolored foot sticking out.

''I thought at first it might be a dead seal, but then I saw the little toes,'' she recalled yesterday. ''I'll never forget that day in my life.''

She called the police to the spot near Beach 114th Street.

The body was badly decomposed, but investigators determined it was that of a boy who was about 3 years old and had broken ribs and vertebrae.
Despite news media attention, no one has claimed him and he has yet to be identified.

But yesterday, there was a poignant tribute to the little boy near the spot where he was found: a funeral Mass attended by many Rockaway residents at St. Rose of Lima Church on Beach 84th Street, which overlooks Rockaway Beach.

People came in police uniforms, Catholic school outfits, suits and beachwear to view the coffin -- the size of a large shoebox -- in front of the altar.

The boy had been given the name John Valentine Hope by the Children of Hope Foundation, which organizes burials for unclaimed children.
The parish pastor, the Rev. Peter Gillen, said the Mass and told some 200 in his church, ''We come here this morning to restore hope where death was found.''

Father Gillen offered encouraging words and commended officers from the 100th Precinct who were ''touched to the heart by the mystery of a life that ended too soon.''

He called the child's life a mystery -- ''Who is he? Where's he from? What happened?'' -- but added, ''He has a dignity that even a mysterious death cannot take from him.

''His life and death are now forever entwined with ours.''

He said the tragedy of a violent death was worsened by a further ''violence of silence'' by the boy's parents, who never claimed him.

''It's that violence of silence that makes this mystery continue,'' he said.
As the church bells tolled, the coffin, which was barely big enough to support a modest bouquet, was carefully carried out by two police officers.

Outside, seagulls squawked in the air and a bagpiper played while the coffin was slid into a hearse made for much bigger loads. A police helicopter flew overhead in a salute and members of the Blue Angels motorcycle club roared their engines and escorted the hearse way to Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, N.Y., where the Children of Hope Foundation has buried other abandoned children in their tiny coffins.

Father Gillen looked out at the ocean and said, ''Here's a baby whose life ends on the beach.'' He added, ''It's hard to imagine no one claiming a connection to this baby.''

The foundation's president, Timothy Jaccard, 55, a medical officer with the Nassau County Police Department, said that publicity from the funerals has encouraged troubled mothers to call the group for counseling, or even to offer their babies for adoption.

Ms. Davis, who lives near the beach where she found the boy's body, said that yesterday's service ''brought humanity to the child.''
''I just wanted to see this child given a name and place to rest,'' she said.


As far as I can tell, the death of John Valentine Hope has never been solved.

Absolutely gut wrenching. As the father of 2 sons, I could never imagine this type of thing. People who make a name for themselves off this type of tragedy are the lowest pond scum that exists.

It's heartbreaking, isn't it? What makes it even worse is that Browne doesn't even try here, no doubt figuring that this poor boy had no one in the world, will most likely never be identified and that even if he was, no one would personally care.

It sounds to me as though she knew she had nothing to gain and everything to lose by a prediction.

If he was wrapped in his sheet, he wasn't thrown from a boat. He was placed on the beach, probably by the parent who didn't murder him. (Assuming one parent/step-parent/live in lover killed the baby and the other is covering it up.)

Someone cared enough to wrap him in a sheet on the beach--marginal, I know, but I do think that parent will eventually cave.

The sheet is not necessarily a sign of caring. It may simply have been a murderer's hasty attempt to hide the body while transporting it.

Well, from what I read in the coverage of this case, I can tell you that very nearly all murdered infants (enspecially newborns) are killed by single mothers, acting alone. This foundation, for example, deals with almost nothing but infanticides by young single mothers. Scenarios such as a sixteen-year-old throwing a baby out of window minutes after it was born.

I don't know how true this is of toddlers, though.

That's just sickening. I keep wondering why you all this web seem obsessed with Sylvia above all the other psychics and I'm beginning to see why. I wonder what she tells her self when she's alone in bed at night? You think she really thinks she's helping?

No. I think all she cares about is helping herself and her kids to other peoples' hard earned money. She keeps saying she cares but from what Robert Lancaster and friends has dug up about her that is a lie.
And I think most of us target her because she's so well-known and her association with Montel keeps her that way. That to me is almost as sickening as Sylvia herself. Montel will not hold her up to scrutiny and instead supports her and now is promoting her more than ever. Has anyone seen how he now has people win a free reading with Sylvia?

Those are really awful. THe first one, it was like a parody, with Montel in the background going "9/11" to try and get her to stop saying water. Then the thing about the firemen's water hoses. EEEIK. This is what I mean, I don't get how ANYBODY on this planet can ever believe a word this lunatic says.

He just uses her to get ratings. I'm not sure who is more despicable.
