• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Does 'rape culture' accurately describe (many) societies?

I'm all for setting up quizzes targeted to search terms - Red States have very particular tastes in general, and it would be a win-win to make them learn about about Constitutional Law and Human Rights.

I'd like to see some evidence behind that claim. Twitter is just a social media platform; one can find pornography easily with a simple internet search. It does not require particular platforms or applications. Even the stupidest of children can type "boobs" into a search engine.

Children find porn on Twitter more than anywhere else. Here’s how it lets them (The Sydney Morning Herald).

"Controversial social media platform Twitter has become one of the most easily accessible places for minors to find pornography, and is in the sights of advocates for restrictions based on age verification.

Unlike sites dedicated to adult content, Twitter and Reddit can evade parental controls and be accessed through apps and app stores because they’re technically communication platforms.

Twitter and Reddit’s social media classifications also let the sites avoid the scrutiny over issues such as the legality of the content and the welfare of the actors that are faced by sites such as Pornhub, which in 2020 took down unverified content after coming under pressure following a New York Times investigation."

Dame Rachel speaking to Radio 4 (UK):
"Most children see porn first on Twitter - and then on Snapchat, as well as accessing the porn companies."

If Mike Johnson can manage to monitor his son's activity, so can anyone else.
It's just weird that he wants his son to monitor his.

This suggests it isn't foolproof (gadgetmates):

Some users use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to bypass the monitoring of Covenant Eyes. A VPN can potentially hide the internet traffic from being monitored. However, this is not a foolproof method, as some advanced monitoring software can detect and report the use of VPNs. Covenant Eyes is one of the best programs ever created to block the “VPN” loophole. Still, it won’t be perfect. Monitor the devices you’re controlling to make sure VPNs aren’t being installed (and possibly uninstalled).

There is an intersection, I think, although it's merely been implied mostly - that the availability and widespread proliferation of "rapey" videos - simulated or not - leads to "rapey" behaviors. Yes yes, I'm familiar with the already cited mantra that "everyone knows the difference between fantasy and reality"; but if we push past that thought-stopping cliche, I think there's at least some merit to the concern.

I agree that there's merit to the concern, but that's not the concern that Poem is focusing on. Their evidence for a widespread and pervasive rape culture is that PornHub does a bad job of controlling content, and of controlling underage access. Absent is any discussion of how access to PornHub actually correlates with a measured increase in rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse, and related sex crimes.

There are some cultures out there that do tend to normalize misogynistic values and behaviors on the "rape spectrum". But they aren't typically the cultures that have normalized casual enjoyment of internet pornography.

"Our monitoring shows once again the total absence of moderation on X," CSA President Karim Ibourki told Le Soir. "X is a totally deregulated platform. So-called 'freedom of expression' has become a front for a platform that is only interested in making money."

Elon?

Okay, now show that France has gotten more rapey because Elon bought Twitter.

Okay? Not every adult has an easy time with computer skills.

https://www.nngroup.com/articles/computer-skill-levels/

Social issues and public policy aren't about what skilled outliers in the population are anecdotally capable of. They're about average skill levels, what kind of information is generally available and understandable to the majority of the population, what's being normalized. Yes, some parents are privileged with the talent, training, free time or other advantages to easily monitor and guide their children's interaction with online pornography. Congratulations on being one of the few to have been blessed with luck to go along with your hard work.

A lot of parents aren't so fortunate.

Have you considered that you might be as gullible as a 13-year old?

I'm a bit perplexed. Are you saying its not currently illegal for children to view porn? If not it certainly should be. And I hope most people don't intentionally allow their kids to see porn.

in the UK it is not illegal for someone under 18 years old to watch porn. It could be illegal for someone to sell or share porn with a child under 18 years old.

I am pretty sure it's broadly the same in Europe and the US.

do you think creating more young criminals is the solution ?

Let's say you accomplish your goal of shutting down Pornhub. What do you think the result would be?

All those videos and all that traffic would go somewhere else that is likely less moderated and has more unethical content that has more front page visibility.

The whole ID verification thing really only makes it slightly more difficult. Anyone can easily use a VPN to simply access the site as though they're from a state or country without ID verification requirements. Even teens can figure this stuff out or just wait till Dad leaves his phone/ wallet on the counter and the kid uses the info to register an account.

If anything, rather than shutting it down, it would be better to advocate for better moderation and enforcement of violations.

A society that does not tolerate a culture of rape would shut Pornhub down; it might then consider whether it would be safe to allow them to continue.

Either way, something needs to be done. As already noted:
Child safety experts have said the harm being done to children is too severe for it to wait to be addressed as part of the online safety bill (ie regarding the UK).

Guardian article on how extreme porn has become a gateway drug into child abuse. Mainstream pornography sites are ‘changing what is normal’, warns child abuse expert Michael Sheath

I don't, but I do think 'society' is guilty of effectively showing children porn.

now, apart from your personal sensibilities:

do you have some objective data that would indicate actual harm being done to a large number of children?

I don't see a rise in sexual crimes that could be correlated with the availability of porn.
Furthermore, access to some level of mental healthcare has never been easier, cheaper, and socially more acceptable.

Compared to problems of child poverty, underfunded schools, insufficient public transport and day-care, not enough paid leave for parents etc. etc. this seems to be a minor problem.

The Guardian (April 2022) - Age checks needed urgently to protect children from online porn, say charities

The Guardian (April 2022) - How extreme porn has become a gateway drug into child abuse

"Michael Sheath is principal practitioner at the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, counselling men who have been arrested for looking at child abuse images. He is on the frontline of what experts say is a global crisis in online child abuse."

If Pornhub, X and Snapchat are hosting illegal material (including CSAM) then many others will be as well.

This goes back a bit: #112
It's not a stupid idea to try to prevent young people from seeing what the experts unambiguously tell us they are being damaged by. You are implying that they are all hopelessly out of touch. Where is the evidence?

just curious:
where are teenagers supposed to get their visual masturbation aid from if not the Internet?

Maybe schools should hand out USB sticks with racy (but not depraved) Erotica?
