Cont: Criminal Charges/convictions Against Trump / Trump Indicted / Hush Money Part IV

RNC co-chair lara trump was asked yesterday morning, by CNN's State of the Union host Casie Hunt, if the Republican Party would continue to support former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan's run for the U.S. Senate. This was because of a post Hogan made on X before the Hush Money verdict was announced

(Twitter post by Hogan calling on people to respect the verdict)

lara trump said:
He doesn't deserve the respect of anyone in the Republican Party at this point, and quite frankly, anybody in America. We, of course, we want to win as a party," Lara Trump said. "But that is a shame and I think he should have thought long and hard before he said that publicly."

Hogan failed to toe the party line! :(
Hogan is another tragedy of the SS Titanic disaster that is Trump.

He is running in a state that Biden won easily in the 2020 election, so he's already an underdog of sorts. If he wins, it will likely be because of his personal popularity and name recognition, and his republican association is likely a detriment.

If he speaks out in favor of Trump, he will lose the support of moderates/swing voters. (Those that say "I didn't like Trump but I can respect a republican who speaks his own mind".) If he speaks out against Trump, he ends up alienating the hardcore MAGAchud that reside in the state (admittedly a smaller demographic but he will need all the votes he can get.)

The smart thing would have been for Lara Trump to just shut up about the senate race, because the republicans will need every senate seat they can get (even if its from a relatively moderate republican) in the upcoming election, and injecting any sort of comments into the senate race is going to backfire.

Waaaahhh! Things aren’t the way they used to be!!!

Erm, things have never been the way they used to be.

Used to be, things were the way they used to be.

That is disputed, for pretty much the same reason you can't say the way things are now is the way things are now without a whole bunch of people getting upset and arguing with you.

I'm sure they do, when they know it won't happen. Just like all suped up bullies the moment the shooting starts they'll **** their pants and cry. The military isn't going to turn on the POTUS and join the rebels. The moment it gets real you'll see these people dropping their weapons so quick.
Counterpoint: The Capitol riot. A thousand armed and dangerous thugs effectively stopped government. Now multiply that by, say, 30, which would be the conservative count of core Trumpista militia gun-nuts out there. And there are plenty of guns available per idjit. To mop up all the riots of that scale across the country would take time and blood. I don't want to be anywhere in the country if that could start up anywhere, any time.

True. But I would hope to see things get better than before, not infinitely worse. I have good friends in the USA!

I'm not asking you to come here, but I think you're grossly overestimating how many people would join in on this revolt. The moment the second drone missile fell and they can't even see the drone, they'll stop.

After the 6th, no one in charge is taking any chances. They'll call in the national guard, or the actual military the moment things heat up. Then it'll be curtains.

Counter-counter point. When Ashli Babbitt hit the ground, the MAGAs back down immediately.

Counter-support point: At the conclusion of the riot the MAGA press and influencer contingent leaned heavily into the entire riot having been staged by Antifa disguised as MAGAs with no actual Trump supporters being involved.

Erm, things have never been the way people think they used to be.

Red part added.

By definition, things have been the way they used to be. The past doesn't change. What changes is people's perception of the past. The problem is that many people want things to be the way they think they remember them. Many people think the past was much better than today. They don't remember the way things really were, or perhaps they know the truth about the past but ignore the bad times and cherry pick the good times.

And this is who the GQP plays to. Older white people who falsely remember the past as being good times. Well, these older white people ignore the fact that the past wasn't good for non-white people. It also wasn't good for women, LGBTQ people, and many other groups. But the GQP doesn't care about that; the "good old days" they want to bring back will be the "bad new days" for an awful lot of people.

Multiple Trump Witnesses Have Received Significant Financial Benefits From His Businesses, Campaign

Nine witnesses in the criminal cases against former President Donald Trump have received significant financial benefits, including large raises from his campaign, severance packages, new jobs, and a grant of shares and cash from Trump’s media company.

The benefits have flowed from Trump’s businesses and campaign committees, according to a ProPublica analysis of public disclosures, court records and securities filings. One campaign aide had his average monthly pay double, from $26,000 to $53,500. Another employee got a $2 million severance package barring him from voluntarily cooperating with law enforcement. And one of the campaign’s top officials had her daughter hired onto the campaign staff, where she is now the fourth-highest-paid employee.

These pay increases and other benefits often came at delicate moments in the legal proceedings against Trump. One aide who was given a plum position on the board of Trump’s social media company, for example, got the seat after he was subpoenaed but before he testified.

Significant changes to a staffer’s work situation, such as bonuses, pay raises, firings or promotions, can be evidence of a crime if they come outside the normal course of business. To prove witness tampering, prosecutors would need to show that perks or punishments were intended to influence testimony.

Nah, Trump would never do something so illegal.

Trump’s attorney, David Warrington, sent ProPublica a cease-and-desist letter demanding this article not be published. The letter warned that if the outlet and its reporters “continue their reckless campaign of defamation, President Trump will evaluate all legal remedies.”

I agree with all the above. We saw no rioting at all after the felony convictions despite Trump's dog whistles.

I'm not equating other Trump defenders to Musk. Billionaires that support Trump have very different reasons than most of the rabble.

Such as getting him off for insider trading. Looks like Musk is as corrupt as Trump. Selling 7.5 billion dollars in stock before releasing terrible quarterly financial reports.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has joined with those Republicans demanding SCOTUS 'step in' and...what? Void trump's convictions? Is that even possible? Mike Johnson seems to think it's very possible, as he explained on Fox News yesterday:
Speaking on Fox, Mr. Johnson said he knew some of the justices on the Supreme Court personally and believed that they shared his view that Mr. Trump was a victim of unfair and politically motivated prosecutions. He also suggested that the legal system was biased against Mr. Trump and other conservatives. “So I think they’ll set this straight,” Mr. Johnson said.“This will be overturned, guys, there’s no question about it. It’s just going to take some time to do it.” MSN news link

I certainly hope and pray to all the non-gods you are right.

But it would not be 30,000 MAGAmutts in one riot at one place, to be taken out by one drone. It would be something like 1000 Proud Boys and 3%ers in 30 locations across a number of states, requiring 30 drones deployed against lots of citizens in the Homeland, plus armed troops intervening. Netanyahu can tell you now what happens when you do that; how "popular" such responses become, at home and internationally.

Nope. They **** on the carpets and pissed on the walls of your prime government building, then ransacked and looted it. This is the class of people Trump is appealing to in his shambolic speeches down an echoing alley beside the courtroom and at his fascist fanboi rallies.

Mike seems to very conveniently forget that neither the NY prosecution team nor the judge in this case pronounced Trump guilty. And the defense team helped choose the jurors who returned a unanimous verdict. Or is Mike now NOT in favour of trial by jury for billionaire white collar criminals? I suspect neither. He is bought and 110% owned by Trump and the MAGA cult.

Not a nightmare, just a repeat of the usual expected excuses. Trump has no idea what the word "conflicted" means. I suspect one of his legal team said it at some point, and he just repeats it like it means something important to him. He's just a bloated wind-up fascist doll now.

...He's just a bloated wind-up fascist doll now.

That millions upon millions of Americans enthusiastically support and who polling shows has a realistic chance of being elected president this fall.

I also note the way trump alternates between calling his 'enemies' fascist or communist. :(

As usual, he only knows those words as pejoratives. Swear words. He has absolutely no idea what they mean. And neither do his followers. What a pity someone didn't tell him that calling someone "copacetic" is probably the worst one.

These people realize that Trump's going to get like a fine, right? And maybe not be allowed to do business in New York again? And that's about it. It's not going to interfere with the convention at all.

Does anyone here genuinely believe that Trump is headed for actual jail time?

i don’t believe it but his post trial actions are making jail time more and more plausible

I certainly don't.

Furthermore, payment of any fine will be delayed by years through a combination of appeals and simply not paying and not a penny will come out of President Trump's pocket. Instead it'll be MAGA cult members and/or corporate or foreign sponsors who foot the bill.

President Trump himself will not be inconvenienced at all.

I have no idea what's going to happen. Ordinarily a first time offender is not likely to get jail time for a class E felony. But dirtywick is right. Trump is pushing his luck. He has been found in contempt 10 times. He doesn’t demonstrate the slightest bit of remorse.

His constant refrain that this is unfair and is rigged does not help him with the judge. I'm expecting a prison sentence that might get suspended. As well as a fine.

This is not an improper request at all. Many protective orders are considered moot after the trial ends. However, since violence against the jurors is still a real threat, it would not be inappropriate to continue some parts of the order that protect their identities.

In perpetuity. Trump is renown for taking vengeance against perceived enemies sooner or later. He is that kind of nice person.

trump has been impeached twice, he's been the target of NY State civil action and a criminal proceeding. As a result of the civil action he has a judgement against him in the hundreds of millions of dollars. In the criminal trial he was found guilty of all 34 counts. He faces criminal actions in Washington DC, in Florida and in Georgia. Johnson and others are correct, no US president has ever faced anything like this. Okay I understand Johnson's reasoning I just don't happen to agree with it.

Unlike every other US president, when trump entered the White House he did so without having had ANY government experience whatever. trump had never served in government, held elected office or even run in an election. trump's lifestyle, his history, his lack of any clearly defined political program or beliefs is completely unlike any of his predecessors. While it is undeniably true that no US president ever faced anything like what trump is facing, chalking it all off to political persecution seems totally unrealistic.

Johnson also said on Fox News Sunday he "knew some of the justices on the Supreme Court personally," adding, "This will be overturned, guys, there’s no question about it." This isn't Matt Gaetz or emptyg that said this. This is the Speaker of the House of Representatives. That sounds very concerning to me. Reminds me of comments attributed to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary. That if you have the judges it doesn't matter what the law is.

Is that where we're going? Is that where trump and his allies plan to take us? :eye-poppi

Yes and yes. And some of our Trump supporting members are perfectly fine with it.

Is that where we're going? Is that where trump and his allies plan to take us? :eye-poppi

Yes.

The Republican Party has made absolutely no secret for decades about their plans to capture the judiciary. They told everyone what they were going to do. And then they did it. And the Democrats just sat there not believing any of it.

Trump campaigned on the promise to appoint judges to achieve the desired outcome on the abortion question. And he kept his promise.

The absolute garbage that passes for reasoning in many of the recent Supreme Court cases evinces that Orbán's maxim is alive and well in the United States. The avenues by which a New York State criminal matter can be appealed into the federal judiciary are limited. But the Roberts Court has been very imaginative on the subject of jurisdiction and standing, as was also the Rehnquist Court.

If the Great American Experiment fails, it will not come from without, but from within. The extreme right is doing all it can to accomplish that, all the while claiming it's saving it. Look to history.

Convicted felon Trump.

I note that his polling numbers are largely unaffected and that 34% of Republicans are more likely to vote for him.

Which is why I like the nickname "Bến Tre Trump".
"It became necessary to destroy the country to save it."

I understand the arrogance of an Elon Musk but how about all the other pro-trump/trump defenders who aren't billionaires and didn't grow up in South Africa? As example, most pro-trump/trump defenders write, say and post that Biden is behind the hush money prosecution despite most legal people saying it's almost certainly false. The people who insist it's false can cite chapter and verse why it is untrue.

But pro-trump/trump defenders just repeat it without ever being willing to discuss it. If you say to a magamutt, "Biden is behind the New York prosecution? Michael Cohen was convicted of the same crime in 2018 when trump was president, not Biden. New York waited to investigate and possibly indict trump too but they held off because trump was a 'sitting president.' I say Biden has nothing to do with all of this. Think I'm wrong? Okay, convince me." But they won't try to convince me. The conversation is over.

Again, using Biden orchestrating the hush money charges and trial. Joe Tacopina just said it was ridiculous. You would expect some of trump defenders would react, explain -- in detail -- why it's NOT ridiculous. Only they won't react and they won't offer any rationale. Other than maybe to call Tacopina names.

It's bizarre. :boggled:

The banality of evil.

The USA doesn't have to worry about the intelligent folks who believe stupid things. Lara Trump is the perfect example why I am more reluctant than ever to revisit the USA.

If Trump becomes president, having such self-centred, stupid-arsed, pea-brained, fascist, racist people like her being put in charge of anything, public safety and the rule of law is going to be the first thing that will be lost. And it is shaping up to be almost as bad if he loses. Because there are enough guns already in the USA to have a decent sized war for years. And these people actually WANT that! They want complete mayhem and bloodshed, they've said that over and over, and Trump's controllers are sieg hieling them into it.

I don't actually think that they do. What they want is to have come out on the winning side of such a war without ever having to take part in it, and most of them would flee if asked to stand.

....and amazingly enough presumptive GOP candidate and person who has a significant chance of winning the next presidential election Trump.

I note that his polling numbers are largely unaffected and that 34% of Republicans are more likely to vote for him.

That MIGHT be explained by more and more moderate Republicans leaving the party, shrinking it further and leaving a rabid hard-core MAGA rump, than wholesale changes of mind.

Maybe, but Trump's poll numbers seem pretty solid. It seems that around 40% of the US electorate are fully on board with MAGA, hardly a rump.

Trump does not represent the extreme right wing, nor does the Speaker, they are now firmly the bulk of the rightwing in the USA, they are simply the right wing. The nearest to extremist right wingers in the USA are now the likes of self identified Nazis and even they are not that extreme!
