No, NOT doing this is extremely dangerous to your democracy.

Because you are firmly ensconced in your comfortable right-wing echo chamber where you only hear the things your tribe want you to hear, you may not realize how close your country came to becoming a right wing dictatorship in the first week of January - with The Fat Orange Turd as the dictator.

It was only the last vestiges of those with some integrity that The Fat Orange Turd had not managed to get rid of, who prevented that from happening. If somehow the unthinkable happens and he gets re-elected to the Presidency, that WILL be the end of your democracy - he won't make the same mistake he made between 2016 and 2020. He will completely gut the civil service administration so that he surrounds himself only with those who are 100% loyal to him - 2024 will be the last US presidential election.

The bulk of the indictment narrates actions taken before 6 January 2021, and most of the narration concerning events of 6 January concern Trump's communications with Mike Pence and others in the morning. The indictment doesn't return to that day's public statements until paragraph 104:
Next, beginning at 11:56 a.m., the Defendant made multiple knowingly false statements integral to his criminal plans to defeat the federal government function, obstruct the certification, and interfere with others' right to vote and have their votes counted.
Paragraph 104 goes on to list those multiple false statements.

Immediately following the one sentence of paragraph 105, the indictment introduces a new major topic: "The Defendant's Exploitation of the Violence and Chaos at the Capitol" (with underlining as in the original). Paragraphs 106 through 123 narrate events of that afternoon through the certification of Biden's victory at 3:41 am on 7 January.

Charlie Savage of the New York Times attached this annotation to paragraph 119:
Mr. Smith did not charge Mr. Trump with inciting the riot, but the indictment ties the Capitol attack to the charged conspiracy by accusing Mr. Trump of trying to exploit the disruption.
Counts two, three, and four incorporate and re-allege paragraphs 1 through 4 and 8 through 123 by reference, so you only have to read through that stuff once. Thus all four counts are charged on the basis of that one narration of events.

Also, its important to note that Jack Smith deals with the "Free Speech" issue almost right out of the gate...
Top of Page 2

3. The Defendant had a right, like every American, to speak publicly about the election and even to claim, falsely, that there had been outcome-determinative fraud during the election and that he had won. He was also entitled to formally challenge the results of the election through lawful and appropriate means, such as by seeking recounts or audit3s of the popular vote in states or filing lawsuits challenging ballots and procedures. Indeed, in many cases, the Defendant did pursue these methods of contesting the election results. His efforts to change the outcome in any state through recounts, audits, or legal challenges were uniformly unsuccessful.

That immediately undermines the Faux News/Newsmax talking points that The Fat Orange Turd is being persecuted because he denied the election.

Trump sees the charges brought by Jack Smith as a rehash of the 2nd Impeachment.
And so do most of his supporters, probably.

And to be fair to him and many Americans, it does look a little like it, as Impeachment pretends to be an actual Trial when in fact it's just pollical theater.
In the Impeachment, making it all political worked well for Trump, and he thinks it will work this time, too.

But now it IS an actual Trial, and pretending it's just political theater won't make it go away.

I think we reached the point where Trump has no one left to intervene on his behalf (not even a certain Florida Judge), but he doesn't know that, so be pumps up the volume so that his new Roy Cohn can hear.

Getting confined pretrial is not out of the realm of possibility here but it won't be one thing. The judge could peg out her fun meter on Trump's cumulative behavior. I expect that if he goes to jail before the trial, it will happen after a series of warnings.

Well, he read a one page summary of the article that someone created for him. Three or four short bullet points, frequent use of his name to hold his attention, and lots of brightly colored pictures.

So says a mob boss person who loves democracy so much that they express their heart-felt concerns.

By the way everyone, ease up on IsThisTheLife. They chose the red pill. We blue pill people are simply unable to comprehend the advanced level of awareness that can be attained when facts are piped in from dimensions 5 through X.

It's a valid tactic which has worked well for him before: when your opponents are spineless, prod them to do the thing you're sure they're too spineless to do. Not only will they still not do it, but they'll get even spinelesser in the future.

If he were jailed, though, that would kill his run for the Presidency. Not only are there some voters who would turn against him because he was jailed, but also, there's a reason why he's always campaigning, even while he was already President. It's because he realizes that his support is like religious people's religiosity: it needs to keep up the constant reminders & pressure on people's minds or else it slacks off.

I'm missing something here. What does a montage of news people saying the same trendy phrases have to do with anything? That journalists lack originality? That one makes an observation and 50 others repeat it? So?

Tough times for our resident conservatives in the USA Politics sub-forum. I can’t imagine this is how any of them thought it would go back in the heady days during the Hillary Clinton investigations and Trump’s election victory. All they can do now is post meaninglessly vague non sequiturs and run away. It’s almost makes me feel bad for them. Almost.

The irony is that video is entirely made up of stations owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group reciting the exact same prepared speech in support of Trump provided to them by their corporate masters, who were cozying up to him to ease regulations on media consolidation.

I'm not sure if we are thinking along the same line, I'm sarcasm challenged. But I'm bummed to see people being a bit too harsh IMO considering the circumstances.

I was wondering if we were supposed to be picking up on the fact that most of the montage were Fox stations. Is ITTL demonstrating that Fox is overwhelmingly not trustworthy as a news source? Seems like that barn door has been opened for a long time.

Looking at other posts on the YouTube channel, I think the original poster there made a mistake about it too.

Boris Ephystein seems to be the general consensus about #6.

Donald Trump says he will ask the Judge to step aside

Quote:
Donald Trump has said he will ask the judge in his election fraud case to step aside on what he called "very powerful grounds".

He claimed that "there is no way I can get a fair trial" unless she does.
Quote:
Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday morning, describing the case as "the ridiculous freedom of speech, slash fair elections case" and saying that his legal team would immediately be asking for recusal of the judge.

He give no details of his grounds for asking her to step down.

ITTL also missed the fact that "this" was a video from two years ago, so it cannot be referring to the current indictments

Altogether now;

"This is extremely dangerous to our democracy".
No, 1/6 and Trump's attempt to steal the election is what is dangerous to our democracy.

Here's his post about removing the judge

@realDonaldTrump

THERE IS NO WAY I CAN GET A FAIR TRIAL WITH THE JUDGE "ASSIGNED" TO THE RIDICULOUS FREEDOM OF SPEECH/FAIR ELECTIONS CASE. EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS, AND SO DOES SHE! WE WILL BE IMMEDIATELY ASKING FOR RECUSAL OF THIS JUDGE ON VERY POWERFUL GROUNDS, AND LIKEWISE FOR VENUE CHANGE, OUT IF D.C.
