I think some of H.L. Mencken's obituary of William Jennings Bryan would fit Trump perfectly today, just substituting "Trump" for "Bryan":

But what of his life? Did he accomplish any useful thing? Was he, in his day, of any dignity as a man, and of any value to his fellow-men? I doubt it. [Trump], at his best, was simply a magnificent job-seeker. The issues that he bawled about usually meant nothing to him. He was ready to abandon them whenever he could make votes by doing so, and to take up new ones at a moment's notice. ... In his last great battle there was only a baleful and ridiculous malignancy. If he was pathetic, he was also disgusting.

[Trump] was a vulgar and common man, a cad undiluted. He was ignorant, bigoted, self-seeking, blatant and dishonest. His career brought him into contact with the first men of his time; he preferred the company of rustic ignoramuses. It was hard to believe... that he had traveled, that he had been received in civilized societies, that he had been a high officer of state. He seemed only a poor clod like those around him, deluded by a childish theology, full of an almost pathological hatred of all learning, all human dignity, all beauty, all fine and noble things. He was a peasant come home to the dung-pile. Imagine a gentleman, and you have imagined everything that he was not.

That was exellent! :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Your post inspired me to read a bit about Bryan. I knew he had been the Democratic Nominee against McKinley then Roosevelt and was famous for his "cross of gold" speech attacking the gold standard. As well as attacking evolution and the Scopes trial.

But I was unaware just how much of a charlatan and demagogue he was.

Trump is hadling this badly. I don't think he knows what to do. He is preaching doom and gloom. The lighter material in his stand up is well worn insults.

Contrast this to Harris. I still can't say she is super at being charismatic and I did not like her speech back in 2020 debates and primaries. But Kamala will have a pretty good chance of convincing people that we are not screwed. After the pandemic and the post pandemic jerks and fits in the running of the world, she is the first one to announce that we are done with that. Done with trump, Biden sent to retirement. We can do this!

I think she has come across as excited and invigorated. There is a lightness to her approach even when she is attacking. I haven't been a fan of her ads where she asks for money. But she has been (so far) fun to watch.

I see also trump has hastily withdrawn from the next debate, usual nasty rhetoric from him excusing it but he's clearly running scared, without Biden's lacklustre performance in the first debate the coverage would all have been around his own gaffes and bizarre statements.

Someone told him that when she was a prosecuting attorney, Harris had the raputation for being somebody a defense attorney hoped they would not have to go up against in court. She could shred a criminal;s defense pretty easy.
And those qualities would serve her well in a debate.

Meh, Trump doesn’t want the company of rustic ignoramuses, he just likes to rile them up. He’s spent most of his life trying to suck up to the established rich and powerful.

I have no doubt in private Trump has total contempt for a lot of his supporters. A con man always has contempt for his marks.
One reason Trump is such a bitter, hateful person is that his attempts to suck up to the establsihed rich and powerful have been a failure. He was always too crude and vulgar to fit in. They might do business with him, but he never got invited to the dinner parties.

Nobody cares.
Perhaps not, but while I rarely find much in Chris's posts to agree with and would not be inclined to trust him with anything too important, his latest posts suggest a level of thoughtfulness not always seen, so let's be charitable. I mean, of course he might not be honest here, but let's imagine he is. In that case I think we can guarantee that a vote for Kennedy is taken away from Trump, not Harris. So yeah, Chris, I'd rather you had a political epiphany and decided to vote for Harris, but in the meantime, go for Kennedy, and do your best to convince your friends to switch over from Trump too. If you have the stomach for neither Harris nor Trump, and strongly value your ability to vote, it's the best alternative.

Wait for it...

Kamala Harris is using Beyoncé's "Freedom" as her campaign song.

'"Beyoncé gave permission to Harris to use [her song "Freedom"] on Tuesday, a campaign official confirmed to The Associated Press who was granted anonymity to discuss private campaign operations."

I heard Beyonce and Taylor Swift are considering doing a fundraising concert together for Harris. That would be epic.

Meanwhile, by many measures the economy is booming:

CNN

Inflation down, and the post covid recession that most pundits, and of course Donald Trump, hoped and believed would crush us never materialized.

Stock market, which Trump insisted would crash under Biden, has soared.

Im still in pain at the grocery checkout, but as a retail shop owner I can attest that while people are spend-wary, they are still spending.

The traditional wisdom that a growing economy predicts the winner of an election would suggest that Dems will win big, especially for the presidency when the GOP candidate is insane and old.

Yet, it still appears to be a tight race, which is quite puzzling and disturbing, it suggests the scam of numerous lies told by right wing media and general distrust in government has had a profound effect. Hopefully Harris or whoever will take them to task for all the nonsense.

Amazon's Prime Day set a new record in sales. Apparently there's a good bit of money out there going to retail.

I suppose Hulk Hogan and Dana White are also “immensely popular”. In fact Joe Rogan, while he is not an open supporter of Trump, is very popular.

I expect they get a lot of criticism from Democrats.

Hulk Hogan openly admits he hates black people and Dana White is a wife beater. Whomever decided to put them on the stage with Trump is an idiot. Unless it was a conscious decision to appeal to racists and misogynists.

From an outside perspective it seems the US has two choices.
A party that wants to protect and expand the rights of the citizens of the US (even those you might not like).
And a party that wants to remove the rights of everyone they don't like (which might include you).

It's probably worth noting that the poster in question is mikegriffith1, not one of the Chris username posters here.

I let these historians explain why Trump will lose:

I say, Blackadder, what a ghastly squit! - He's not going to win, is he? -
No, sir.
Because, firstly, we shall fight this campaign on issues, not personalities.
Secondly, we shall be the only fresh thing on the menu.
And thirdly, of course, we'll cheat.

I know the Vance boy is new to this whole politics thing, and he suffers from an intellectual deficit. But did he really just break the first rule of all politics everywhere? You don't **** with the cat people.

Yes but as someone else pointed out, have you seen what cats do to sofas?
