Solidarity with Denmark

It's the equivalent of a historical urban legend, but the story goes that when the Nazis occupied Denmark and mandated that Jews wear the yellow star, King Christian X put one on, and encouraged his gentile subjects to do the same. True or not, it illustrates the attitude that the Danish had, and the balls they had for standing up to the SS - the Danish resistance smuggled a good chunk of the Jewish population into Sweden on a single night.

As a Jew, I want to reciprocate in whatever small way I can and support Denmark. Any ideas that can be implemented by little old me, here in Israel where we have a front seat to all this madness?

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the support of Denmark and Norway in this crisis. We are not used to being the center of attention, and action, in a situation of this magnitude (at least not since 1066).

So thank you for all the support, and all the Danish and Norwegian flags. I sincerely hope this madness blows over soon.

It's nice to know that Denmark have support out there.

Thank you very much.

The story goes that when the Nazis occupied Denmark and mandated that Jews wear the yellow star, King Christian X put one on, and encouraged his gentile subjects to do the same.

There is also a story that when asked by the Nazis if he agrees that Denmark has a jewish problem, he said that it doesn't: the Danes insist on considering themselves absolutely equal, in achievement and intelligence, to the jews amongst them.

Both of these stories are almost certainly not true--as is undestandable, since being such a wise@$$ in real life with Nazi generals could lead to horrible consequences not only to the king himself but to the jewish Danes.

What IS true, however, is that the Danes bravely saved as many jews as they could despite dire Nazi threats, which is of course far more important.

I got your back against the Islamic fundamentalists Denmark. The cat is out of the bag now, exposed for the entire world to see.

If they - the fundamentalists - had their way Israel would be destroyed and we would all be living under Shahira Law with religious police, censorship and no room whatsoever for satire in any form.

I have always been a staunch supporter of Israel...but at the same time felt that they needed---in their own best interest---to try harder not to provoke their Muslim neighbors. No more. These people are this upset over a bloody cartoon fer chrissake!!!!!!!!! One that I guarantee most of them have never even seen.

Muslims as a group will not be appeased until everyone else either converts or is dead. There is simply no way to reach out to these cultural knotheads. Israel needs to do whatever they need to do to survive. And we all need to get serious about finding an alternative to oil so we can tell these 14th century cretins to go play in the sand and just kill each other over any minor slights to their flabby little heart's content.

What we need is for our Danish and Norwegian forumites to post the names of companies that export their products worldwide.

I am drinking my coffee this morning out of a glass made by Bodum, originally a Danish company, but now located in Switzerland. It doesn't seem to count to me.

I hereby throw my support behind Denmark and all Danes! (even if they are smelly little wankers ) And I encourage all of you to eat Norwegian sardines and kippered herring three times a day! (You may wish to invest in some mouthwash too.)

Ok, heres a little thing.
This is a seachable database on danish exporters. Simply indput what you want and a series of compagnies should pop up, adresses etc.

http://www.danishexporters.dk

And then there is this:

http://www.export-denmark.dk/websiteuk.htm

Granted, its mainly the buisness oriented part of the population, whom are targeted by this, but it should give you some idea on what you are buying if you take a look at the manufacturer of the product.

Denmark has always been one of my favourite countries.

Not only was my favourite toy Danish, but my favourite computer game - "Citadel" by Michael Jakobsen and Lars Osterballe from for the BBC B.

One of my favourite comedians, the brilliant Sandi Toksvig, is Danish too.

(Incidentally, when the loonies have been burning the Danish flag, haven't they been burning a cross... ...shows how much they care about religious tolerance)

The Danish flag is based on a Crusader uniform, so in some ways, it's not that inappropriate.

From snopes :

Quote:
A Swedish newspaper cartoon (possibly the origin of this legend) depicted the monarch talking with the former Danish prime minster, who asks him, "What are we going to do, Your Majesty, if Scavenius makes all the Jews wear yellow stars?" (Erik Scavenius was the Danish foreign minister who became prime minister at the insistence of the Germans after the Danish government resigned in 1943.) The king responds by asserting, "We'll all have to wear yellow stars."
In fact, no such yellow star decree was ever passed, so it didn't come to that.

However:

Quote:
In fact King Christian rejected many aspects of the occupation, made speeches against the occupying force and became known as a protector of the Jews.

In December 1941, after an arson at the synagogue in Copenhagen, he sent a letter of sympathy to Rabbi Marcus Melchior.
]Here
Stuff which is probably true:

Quote:
Another popular story, generally accepted as truth, concerned Christian's resistance to the flying of the Nazi flag over Christiansborg Castle, home of the Danish Rigsdag, during the occupation. According to the story, the king summoned a senior Nazi general and instructed him to remove the flag. When the general refused to do so, Christian declared, "A Danish soldier will remove it." The German officer said that such a soldier would be shot. The king's reply was "I think not. For I shall be that soldier." The general immediately ordered the removal of the flag. Wikipedia
Stuff which is definitely true:

Quote:
In 1942, Adolf Hitler sent the king a long telegram congratulating him on his 72nd birthday. The king's reply telegram was a mere Meinen besten Dank. Chr. Rex (English: My thanks. King Christian). This perceived (and no doubt deliberate) slight greatly outraged Hitler and he immediately recalled his ambassador from Copenhagen and expelled the Danish ambassador from Germany.
I suppose the name of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg takes a lot of living up to. But history will never forget it.

The thing that Danes actually wore as a symbol of resistance during the Nazi occupation was called a kongemærket ("King's Mark") --- see my avatar.

The Norwegian symbol of resistance was the binder, i.e. saying 'we're sticking together'.

Wearing a symbol of the king would get you shot.

If I remember correctly, I once read in a history book that Christian 10th were put in house arrest in Amalienborg and promptly decided to take a ride on his horse everyday.

Ask a Dane to do something, they might.
Tell them, they resist, but, if they see the point, ultimately do it.
Threaten them and they do the oppersite.

Something our own politicians should have remembered during the Mastricht Treaty (EU ammendment) votes. And the reason why entertainer Jacob Haugsgaard got voted into parliament against his will......

I remember that - top down display with some great scrolling. I think it had some synthasized speech as well saying "citadel....citadel...citadel"? Quality!

Did you know Sandi Tosksvig spent most of her youth in america and speaks with an american accent when over there?

What would be the appropriate type of flower to send to the Danish embassy?

Does Denmark have a national flower?

Its the Marquerite allthough the Daisy have a value as well since it's connected to our queens nickname.
The most popular flower is, from a sentimental viewpoint, ironicly, the Dandelion/Milk Govan.

Otherwise simply go with a "Language of the flowers" type of thing.

Edit: Clarification

Not only that, but the crusades were mutual. Christendom fought to stem the spread of Islam, but Islam fought to spread Islam as well.

Also, by any reasonable measure, Islam won the crusades.

Nah, you guys were smart enough, unlike Denmark in the 70'ties when it was still called EF, to stay out.
At least we got to keep our own currency....After beating our politicians over the head a couple of times....

Hold on a minute!

Quote:
Denmark 4-1 England

Denmark scored three goals in seven second-half minutes as England were humiliated in their final game before their World Cup qualifier in Wales.
Nooooooooooooooooooo! Damn you Denmark!

I guess we could all buy Danish feta cheese, but what is it labeled as now that the Greeks got angry? "Feta Fantasie"? "Danish Greek-Style Cheese"?

reminds me of when they tried to make a movie about the life of the Prophet.

The closest they could come to showing HIM was his camel stick. So every now and again the movie would cut to ....a camel stick. The main character had to be HIS uncle, as HIS closer relatives could not be shown. Anthony Quinn played the uncle...

Even though if I remember Libya was the main financer of the movie, it lead to rioting all over the world. The movie makers wanted to build a replica of Mecca also, that didn't go over well (the Muslim leaders were afraid a replica would become a place of worship, like their faithfull couldn't tell the difference...)

It was also one awful movie.

A pleasure.

Now that is a good idea.

Someone started a petition to support the Danish newspaper -- Jyllands Posten
http://www.petitiononline.com/danmark/petition.html

I signed it but I would like to do more. Any suggestions? Anyone know of any demonstrations being scheduled to show support for the Danes and the other European countries?

The only thing I can think of for now is to write an e-mail to my senators and representative. So far I think the only public comments by the USA State department has been to show understanding to the Muslims about their reaction to the cartoons and nothing about the assaults to Denmark's freedoms. Completely unacceptable.

I've been doing some reading since these posts and this has been going on for a long time. Theo Van Gogh (a Danish film director) was killed in 2004, a Danish parliament member, Geert Wilders, had been under death threats, an instructor at one of the Danish Universities, Carsten Niebuhr Institute was beaten for reading excerpts from the Koran to non-Muslims -- the list just goes on and on.
